Perfect Collection of Photographs

I have pruchased this book in 1996 and have enjoyed every single page. If you are a seaman and are fond of old steam ships, which are becoming rare museum pieces, this is the perfect book to have alook at them. Especially the Imperial Yachts of the Sultans, their graceful lines and splendor are noteworthy. I have met the authors and thanked them personally for their outstanding work and I would like to repeat my thanks to them here once again.

A genuine piece of Turkish Delight - savour it!

This book is an absolute delight, opening up a vista into a long-gone world when Turkey hovered on the brink of embracing modernity but, in those pre-Ataturk days, never gathered the courage for the final plunge. The numerous high-quality photographs are as valuable for the picture they give of a vanished society as for the technical content. Grave moustachioed and befezzed officers and smart-looking seamen look at the camera across immaculately holystoned decks, obviously proud of their custodianship of the products of British, German and French shipyards and armaments workshops - images which are in many cases at sharp variance with the actuality of venality, corruption and inefficiency that governed their daily lives (The story in the text of Ottoman seamen stranded at a German shipyard, and practically destitute, as the funds do not become available to pay for the refurbishment of their ship, is especially pathetic). Those who love Turkey and the Turks will enjoy these photographs even if they have little interest in naval history - the views of ports, shipyards and the Golden Horn are quite splendid. The book is in fact in three main sections - an introductory text, a superb collection of photographs and a technical appendix that provides not just specifications and brief histories of every ship to serve in the Ottoman navy in the period covered, but also excellent general arrangement drawings and hull lines for many of them. This book is one that is to be treasured by anybody with an interest in naval matters of the ironclad and pre-World War 1 age. I have enjoyed it since I have purchased it and will regard it as a source of valuable reference and entertainment for years to come. Buy it!

Brief history, lots of pictures, and powerful images

Although not enough commentary on the pictures abundant in this book, the rare collections themselves are stunning and spoke directly to you of a once mighty Utsmani Devlet. You have to focus hard and connect the scattered pieces of facts in order to make some arguments from this remarkable work.
To get the best out of this book you'll need to read a few introductory works on the Utsmani period of modern navy, plus some history on the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea, Western Mediterranean, and the Indian Ocean. Yes, surprisingly, they actually controlled much of those waters then.

About the Author
Michael W. Maher, Ph.D., is Professor of Management and Accounting and Associate Dean for Faculty at the Graduate School of Management at the University of California, Davis. He received his bachelor's degree in accounting from Gonzaga University and his MBA and Ph.D. from the University of Washington (Seattle). He has experience in public accounting, has co-managed his own business, and consulted with numerous companies and governmental bodies. Dr. Maher is active in the Management Accounting Section of the American Accounting Association, including service as president. He has co-authored numerous books and published articles in numerous journals.

Clyde P. Stickney is the Signal Companies' Professor of Management, Emeritus at the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration, Dartmouth College. He received his DBA from Florida State University and taught at the University of Chicago and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before joining the Tuck School in 1977. He has also taught at business schools in Japan, Australia, Finland, and Germany. Prof. Stickney has authored and coauthored books on financial accounting, managerial accounting, and financial statement analysis.

Roman L. Weil, Ph.D., CPA, is the V. Duane Rath Professor Emeritus of Accounting at the University of Chicago and has within recent years been Visiting Professor at the Haas School of the University of California, Berkeley; Carnegie Mellon University; Harvard Law School; Princeton University; and New York University. He has designed and implemented continuing education programs for partners at two of the large accounting firms and for employees at several operating corporations. Dr. Weil has co-authored dozens of books. His lay articles have appeared in Barron's and The Wall Street Journal. He has published more than 80 articles in academic and professional journals, most recently on financial literacy for corporate governance and on the exposure of wine snobbery.

Superbly written and excellent learning tool

As a professor who teaches this topic at both the undergraduate and graduate level, I feel that this text is without a doubt the most cleanly written and well thought-out text there is on this topic. While you might find books out there that are more comprehensive and attempt to cover more material, and ones that might delve into levels of detail and complication in terms of computations, there is simply none better in terms of readability. As a Socratic professor, this is KEY to having my students fully prepared for class.

If you are looking for a "how to" style book with a "preparer emphasis" however, I recommend you look elsewhere to something like Hansen, Noreen or Garrison. The focus on this book is DISTINCTIVELY critical thinking and problem solving concepts, which can be frustrating if you are looking for a "how to manual". Instead, this book focuses on the "why", and does leave more of the "how" to the student and professor than many others.

The book has a very conceptual approach and it's handling of both ethical AND cultural factors involved in the management accounting process is second to none.

For an MBA course looking for a superbly-written book that students can and will read, seeking to blend great conceptual content with the development of critical thinking skills and a true global impact, you simply cannot - and I repeat - cannot beat the new edition of this book - period.

Almost the same as the last edition, end of chapter problems are different

The content is the same as the last edition. The publisher has only changed numbers in the problems at the end of the chapter. It's very unfortunate that publishers take advantage of students like this

I hate this book!

Hard to read, does not have enough sample problems. This text book is for people with an account background as an undergrad. If your undergrad is not accounting, this book does not provide the foundational material that would allow you to read it! To clarify, I did take two undergrad accounting course and to well in both and felt I mastered the material. This book was just to advance and hard to read! Worthless!

By the Ages is one quick-reference manual that cuts to the chase and supplies parents with basic, helpful information about what parents can expect from their child's social, intellectual, and physical development from the first few months after conception through the eighth year. At once fascinating and pragmatic, the majority of the book is presented in lists and bullet points that manage to balance thoroughness with brevity.

The first two chapters are a mini course in developmental psychology, complete with multiple-choice tests at the end. Explaining everything from age-level expectancies to the interrelatedness of development areas, these 35 pages define important terms, provide examples, and explain a few basics, like why it's flat-out impossible to toilet train an infant. Further chapters are separated by age; if you're the parent of a 2-year-old with another child approaching age 5, you'll know exactly which pages to head for first. About the Author
Lynn R. Marotz, Ph.D., R.N., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Life at the University of Kansas. She also serves as the Associate Director of the university's Child Development Center. Ms. Marotz is co-chair of the Higher Education Consortium on Early Childhood Education. She is a member of the Stakeholder's Advisory Committee/Early Childhood Council, Kansas State Board of Education. She is also a member of the Kansas Early Care and Education Professional Development Initiative, as well as a member of the Early Childhood Professional Preparation Initiative. She is a council member for the Gateway's to Early Childhood Careers Project and serves as a board member for the Douglas County Child Development Association (NAEYC Affiliate). In 1998, she was a visiting scholar at Arizona State University and is a former finalist for University Employee of the Year (1997).

Eileen K. Allen, Professor Emerita, University of Kansas, spent 30 years as a professor of child development and early childhood education at the University of Washington in Seattle and the University of Kansas at Lawrence. Throughout her career, Eileen was active in national and international organizations focused on the development of young children and their families, including NAEYC, the Commission on Early Childhood Teacher Education, the Council for Exceptional Children, and the National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators (NAECTE).

Provocative and exciting

This was a both a thought-provoking and arousing read. It's well written and well thought out, and tapped right into the psychology of owning and being owned. My only quibbles are that there were a number of typos and word errors (mostly towards the end), and I would have liked it if the author had addressed how a couple might incorporate concepts of ownership when they aren't free to go into full ownership. Nor did he address the downsides of ownership. In short, this wasn't so much a practical guide, as the title might seem to suggest; rather, even though it presents supposedly true cases, I'd say it's a theoretical exploration of an extreme D/s lifestyle.

Have read many titles on this subject. By far this has been the best. My mind really opened up to what I expect from my woman, as we head down the path of our D/s relationship.

Truly unique.

Straight honesty from the male perspective but very powerful. Don't listen to the negative reviews. People just hate when others don't conform to their way of thinking, even in the world of kink. This book probably isn't for everyone but its originality can't be denied.
