My Only Real Complaint? This One Was Over Way Too Soon!

Despite being a pretty quick read, SMUGGLER’S RUN is actually very good, much of which is owed to the fact that (A) it stars Han Solo; (B) it guest stars the best (and biggest) co-pilot in the Outer Rim, namely Chewbacca; and (C) it’s a web spun by no less than Greg Rucka, a guy who’s probably forgotten more about quality entertainment than most people ever learn.

Basically, what you have with SMUGGLER’S RUN is a Solo-mission set not long after the events depicted in STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE, back in the time when Han was a bit more disillusioned (still) about the Rebellion than he was ever in favor of it (a problem I thought that plagued STAR WARS: RETURN OF THE JEDI, by don’t get me started on that!). Rucka’s Solo feels more like the smuggler from A NEW HOPE, a guy whose wisecracks were a bit more sparing then happened in the latter two films of the Original Trilogy. He was always ready with a blaster, this one was, and that lovable space pirate returns for much of this adventure, and it’s great to see the hotshot pilot back in top form.

If anything, I could quibble about how quickly this RUN ends. About the time it’s kicking into high gear, a reader quickly realizes there aren’t all that many pages left, and I definitely would’ve loved to have spent more time with Solo, Chewbacca, and Beck, the villainous Imperial officer who uses cybernetic enhancements to outmatch those she hunts.

And – would you expect otherwise? Any time Solo’s around, you know the bounty hunters can’t be that far off. In RUN, Rucka creates a squad that appears at times like it’s bound to take down the Falcon’s captain, and that’s only part of the magic smuggled into these pages.

Like the others YA releases that’ve hit the shelves in anticipation of THE FORCE AWAKENS, this one is bookended with an older lead character (Solo) spinning a yarn for anyone who’ll listen; and Rucka quite possibly makes the best use of that narrative device here, combining healthy parts and characters from both timeframes into the action. Still, I didn’t find it as exciting a space trip as Luke Skywalker’s THE WEAPON OF A JEDI, but it’s leaps and bounds better than Princess Leia’s MOVING TARGET, a slow-moving jaunt that offers little legitimate peril.

Fantastic Han Solo and Chewbacca story

This is just fun! It's Han Solo right after Yavin, allowing himself to be convinced to run an emergency mission for the Rebels. The characterization is top-notch and the story does a great job of showcasing the dark side of the Empire without getting too nasty -- perfect for the 5th-9th graders this story is aimed at. This is a fun read for middle schoolers and adult fans alike.

A Star Wars Adventure in its Purest Form

"Smuggler's Run" is the Star Wars equivalent to an hour of really, really good television. It's sharply paced, cleverly written, and full of all the charm and excitement that a Han and Chewbacca adventure could ever need. It starts off running and doesn't slow down until the, albeit slightly abrupt, ending, and while the story isn't anything we haven't seen before––Han and Chewie are sent to a backwater planet to extract a Rebel soldier before a ruthless Imperial can get to him––author Greg Rucka writes with such an electric style that once I started the book I couldn't put it down.

Rucka writes some of the best Han and Chewie moments I've seen from the Star Wars novels in years, and his passion for the universe he's playing is immediately apparent and undeniably infectious. Even with only 180 pages, Rucka tells a story that thrives off of its characters, and somehow manages to not only deliver an outstanding Han and Chewie escapade, but also introduce us to several new characters who I wouldn't mind seeing more of in the future.

If you're looking for a quick, purely enjoyable Star Wars action romp, then "Smuggler's Run" is just the book for you. It doesn't come packed with any substantial hints about The Force Awakens, although the story is bookended by a tantalizing peak at what Han and Chewie are up to in their moderately older age, but rather focuses on delivering a fast-paced story full of intrigue, action, and a fantastic cast of characters. It's Star Wars in its purest, and simplest, form, and is absolutely worth picking up.

I highly recommend this book to any person studying or working in the childcare field. This book is fantastic it gives you an overall knowledge on each theorist to link your work to, it has quotes, and best of all I use it every single week when I link my Observations to theorist.
For me this was money well spent.

Female writer gets it right

I won't summarize the story, because you have several other summaries already. I will only say this: Several of the analytical comments below are simply wrong. O'Brien's view of Ireland's history is right on the mark. Ireland's "troubles" really started in the 1100's when Irishman Dermott McMurragh asked King Henry II of England to allow him to recruit Anglo-Norman mercenary soldiers to help him defeat his Irish enemy. Those mercenaries came, liked it, and stayed. THAT was the beginning of the English occupation of Ireland. But even before that, Irish families fought among themselves for control of the land and resources. You only have to read the "Cattle Raid of Cooley" to know that. In a very real sense, there IS blood in the very soil of Ireland. And O'Brien is RIGHT that the only way to ever solve that problem--or the Middle Eastern problem or the American racial problem--is for EVERY voice to be heard (that's why the narrative voice keeps changing; it is purposeful)and EVERY person to be known as a human being and not just as "them" or "the enemy."
She has these two unlikely people, each with their grievously painful stories, come to know and respect each other. She becomes like Mother Ireland (Cathleen ni Houlihan) to him, and he becomes to her like the child that she never had, the one she aborted.
It is a book that is about understanding and forgiveness, a theme amazingly and ultimately spoken through the voice of the aborted child itself. In the first chapter, this dead child's spirit hates her mother and wants her to suffer, but in the end, she understands and forgives. That is what the child prays for in the end, understanding and forgiveness.

Spare Prose and Extraordinary Power

Edna O'Brien in general and this very fine novel in particular deserve a much greater readership. The plot here -- IRA fugitive, McGreevy, hides out in the crumbling home of an aged widow, Josie -- is the simple premise on which O'Brien builds a vertiginous, multi-layered tale of fatefully intersecting interpersonal and national histories. The third person narrative points of view are multiple and, especially in the quick cuts to those on the fugitive's trail, occasionally confusing. McGreevy and Josie are both superbly drawn and utterly convincing, although their emotional linkage is achieved too quickly, just as the flashbacks to Josie's horrid marriage make her reveries of quiet good times with her husband scarcely credible. The prose is spare, with no wasted words, and one of the wonders of this novel is that O'Brien nonetheless thoroughly conveys the lushness of the drizzly Irish countryside, the complexity of the struggle and the underlying sense of national unity that all the characters -- no matter how harshly at war with one another -- feel. And she has packaged all that in what is also from start to finish a superbly suspenseful tale. The 230 or so pages flash by, making The House of Splendid Isolation an exciting and rewarding one-sitting read.

Splendid writing, spendid story.

If you read the Kirkus Review above, you won't even have to buy the book, if all you are interested in is the plot.

Fortunately, there's much more here, and I wish I knew how O'Brien does it! Of the thousands of books I've read, this is the first one which really made me feel that the author "let the story tell itself." For most of the book, there's no sense that an author is pulling strings or trying to create. She "merely" presents fully drawn characters, and they truly live on the page.

Yet at the conclusion, the admiring reader realizes that every conflict and ultimate reversal in the book has had a fine hand guiding, but never obviously controlling, it--from Josie's psychological imprisonment to McGreevy's escapes, from her frustrations in love to his satisfactions, from her experiences that life is something that happens to her to his belief that one must mobilize to work toward a higher goal, from their attitudes toward the church to their conflicted feelings about the IRA.

Somewhat extravagant in its romanticism at the end, that extravagance, nevertheless, is totally appropriate to its subject, its characters, and its Irish setting.

About the Author
Nancy Frey, Ph.D., a Professor at San Diego State University received the 2008 Early Career Achievement Award from the National Reading Conference. Dr. Frey has published in The Reading Teacher, English Journal, Remedial and Special Education, and Educational Leadership. She has co-authored more than fifty books on English Learners (Language Learners in the English Classroom), assessment (Checking for Understanding), writing (Scaffolded Writing Instruction), literacy (Reading for Information in Elementary School) and vocabulary (Learning Words Inside and Out). Dr. Frey teaches a variety of courses on reading instruction and literacy in content areas, classroom management, and supporting students with diverse learning needs. Good Text for my Purposes at Work: ESOL

I needed more research on ESOL. This work on techniques and methods for ESOL students and our means to produce sustainable and meaningful talking points is sound. I already knew all of this, but when presenting trainings, this text presents the material well. No more turn and talk for ELs who are beginning! Ugh! Hate what 'all" teachers do for 'all' students 'all' the time.

When is differentiation really going to hit home? If you need a text to help you show, simply, a set of methods to deliver accountable talk to ELs and "all" students, I felt this was sound and targeted.

He eats everything in sight: his bowl, toy trains, the dining-room table, the fence, and the back porch. His owners, a vet, and two dog trainers are all incapable of stopping the pup's destructive behavior. Just when it looks as though the family will have to find a new home for their pet, he suddenly outgrows his nasty need to nibble. "He's not a puppy anymore," father proudly explains, while a 13-man construction crew works to repair the damaged house. Humorous colored-pencil cartoons reveal the devastation caused by the wee pooch and the family's reactions to the chaos left in his wake. Chewy Louie's exuberance is almost palpable and his teeth marks are everywhere. He's depicted as a small black dog with a pink tongue hanging out one end while his other end wags so vigorously that he appears to have multiple tails. Readers are left with the tiniest doubt about Louie's newfound maturity upon discovering that a corner of the last page has been chewed off. An entertaining tale about an all-too-common situation.

At first he is content to chew on his bowl and toys, but as he grows, he begins to take bites out of everything, including the family car and the house. The efforts of two trainers fail to change his ways; peace doesn't come to the family until Louie grows up. Schneider's bright, cartoonlike colored-pencil illustrations perfectly capture Louie's manic energy and the text's exaggerated humor, especially the bafflement of the book's narrator, the little boy in Louie's beleaguered family. very funny and adorable story

If you have ever owned a puppy that chewed you will love this adorable story. I got this book for my grandchildren who have two dogs and they loved it and wanted their Mom to read it over and over again. The story about the puppy who chewed everything is really funny and the pictures are adorable.

This book isn't my least favorite, nor my favorite. It's about a puppy that chews everything... he's a monster! But like all puppies, and all children, he grows up. It's a cute book, just not one that we reach for often.

An intimate portrait of a community searingly damaged by traditions, this is a densely imagined, beautiful and deeply troubling book written in heightened prose saturated with imagery. It casts a deep gaze on themes as timeless as love, nationalism and religion, while meditating on how these forces drive us apart.
