About the Author
Rebecca is an English illustrator living in Australia. She grew up in a creative, if slightly eccentric, family. Her days were spent roaming the English countryside collecting wild flowers and leaves, chasing butterflies and birds, and drawing tiny pictures of everything she could. After graduating from art school in Winchester, she moved to London where she worked as a textile designer. She worked there for a few years, until her restlessness had her flying off to Australia in search of adventure. Now she has replaced the countryside with concrete, and lives slap-bang in the middle of a big city. But she is to be found most days in her studio, drinking endless cups of tea, staring out of the window at a bunch of imaginary critters, and trying to draw them.

The book is really nice. I didn't like having to wait so long ...

I am really enjoying coloring. I wish the front of the envelope wasn't quite so busy. If I mail these cards the addresses will have to be crammed into the space provided which is not very big and the return address will have to be put on the back unless you cover some of the coloring. The book is really nice. I didn't like having to wait so long to get it - but it's certainly worth it.

I love to color and there is an abundance of Christmas ...

I love to color and there is an abundance of Christmas critters and candy canes to work on. I have anxiety real bad, I think a lot of us do, and I come to this off & on for the same page I'm working on and get it done to go to the next one. Very relaxing & since I'm a real home body makes me feel very festive without going to all the 'buy me, buy me' stores!

A Must-Have. Highly Readable.

I was initially a little skeptical of a book that was a bit old, thinking it would be outdated, but I found this to be extremely relevant. Upon buying the book, I initially jumped to the games section, skipping over the details of Berne's theories. I was immediately struck with how many games I was unconsciously playing in both my relationship with my spouse and in my work life. With my spouse, I found the games "If It Weren't For You" and "Look How Hard I've Tried" to be hauntingly similar to some of our interactions. I've recently been analyzing my transactions with colleagues at work and noticed patterns that fit many of the games described here as well.

Berne's section on the theory behind games is fascinating. I recommend reading about some of the games first and then moving to the theories. By understanding the theories, you learn WHY you inevitably participate in these games. After I understood why I was being drawn into these patterns, I was able to understand my motives. And ultimately, after understanding my motives, I was able alter my actions and responses when needed.

Overall, I found this book to be very useful in understanding my relationships with people. It is refreshingly different than a lot of the self-help material out there. This book cuts right to the chase and gives you tools to live by. I highly recommend it. After reading this book, I also read What Do You Say After You Say Hello by Eric Berne as well as Scripts People Live by Claude Steiner.

An Oldy, but a Goody!

This book is one of the Bibles of the Transactional Analysis school of social psychology/psychiatry. The other "Bible" is I'm OK -- You're OK by Thomas A. Harris, M.D.

Before reading Games People Play, it is a good idea to read I'm OK - You're OK. There are two reasons why. First, I'm OK is a general introduction to Transactional Analysis whereas Games People Play deals with a narrow aspect of the subject. Second, I'm OK is written in an easier style than the present book. In fact, if I hadn't already studied I'M OK, I might not have understood Games People Play.

The author of Games People Play was the founder of the TA school. The author of the other book was his follower. Transactional Analysis was popular during the 1960s and 1970s. Since then, it has lost some of that popularity in America, although it still seems to be going strong in Australia. The society founded by Dr. Berne still exists in this country, today.

Before investing in a copy of the book, you might want to check Wikipedia which has an excellent article about Tranactional Analysis. Games, the subject of this book, are special behaviors that people use to accomplish ulterior designs. For example, the game called "If it Weren't for You I'd...." helps people feel better about NOT doing things they are really afraid to do.

I believe this book and the school of Transactional Analysis are worthwhile for everyone who wants to understand human nature.

Knowing when you are manipulated by others will lighten your life burdens!

I remember buying this book when it hit the market, and now I'm buying it for others in my family to read. I'm sixty now so I've had plenty of time to see lots of games and manipulation, some of which I got pretty good at myself. No blame or shame involved. Most families pass down their learned ways of coping to the next generation so this stuff has always been going on. As I age I am very much less interested in other's games or even my own. Victims, tears, blame, "you caused my problems" I just leave to their owners. Life is too full of fun to be manipulated or guilt-tripped by anyone, and I do believe in total responsibility for my life and what happens in it. Read this and forgive yourself for your games and unplug from other's attempts to control you by any means they can. This book is one of my favorites! Recommended reading for those in the pangs of guilt from anyone, even parents or children.

I got annoyed that a supposedly nursing mother of a newborn could ...

well written, well edited with strong characters. The plot was fairly predictable but it does work. I got annoyed that a supposedly nursing mother of a newborn could just go out for the night without any consequences but overall, I enjoyed the book.

Had faults I couldn't get pass (spoilers ahead)

The plot would of been great but the way it unraveled was just too much to get pass; the first issue was the time frame, everything was happening at an unbelievable progression. Exp. Scene #1 Alicia calls her mom to let her know she will be there next week but then after the incident with Niko (which happened that night), next week turned out to be the next day and that still doesn't add up with the extra day off. Scene #2 Alicia is already feeling pregnancy symptoms a few days after having sex with Niko. There are more scenes but you get the point with the time frame and even though it won't make me turn down the book for just that reason, it does put a damper on making the story believable.

The heroine was my biggest issue because of her actions. Having sex with a married man is not something I approve but I got past it.Thinking about blackmailing the H into giving her money just after finding out she is having his baby and then actually following through with it was a low blow and for that sole action she became unredeemable in my book.

Niko was also not a great H. He came off as someone who just wanted to get off with the h. He would say things to her and say he would only be there for the child. Yea a baby he only saw twice a week. There was some serious lacking of chemistry with these two but you wouldn't think so when their having sex. The hospital scenes were a dead give away of how he acted towards her but the one that struck me the most was letting her go home in a taxi. After. Giving. Birth!

Their reunion at the end was not that great and I did think that drinking while breastfeeding was wrong but it's just my opinion. Also, only a few weeks passed since giving birth yet she was having sex. I could be wrong but I know a "few weeks" is less than four weeks. I would say more than a month/s has passed just to make it more believable instead of always saying a few weeks. Sorry if I'm getting too technical but it's always good pointers to the author! The writing was not bad and I don't think I saw any bad editing so that's a bonus.

A Must-Have for Current or Aspiring Beer Geeks

Before I review Randy Mosher's "Tasting Beer: An Insider's Guide to the World's Greatest Drink," let me give you a few calibration points so you can decide whether to take my opinions seriously or not. I definitely qualify as a serious beer geek. My travels around the U.S. nearly always involve visits to brewpubs. I'll drive hundreds of miles out of my way to have a pint of good craft brew, and I attend as many beer festivals each year as I possibly can. My favorite beers are Imperial stouts, barleywines and Imperial I.P.A.s, such as Alesmith's Speedway, Stone's Old Guardian and Moylan's Hopsickle (among many others). I enjoy the occasional Belgian (the funkier the better), and I consider Fat Tire to be an overly hyped "training-wheels beer" for people who don't know any better. I couldn't choke down a Bud, Coors or Miller if I were dying of thirst, and (yes, it's true) I tend to be a little snobbish toward people who are unwilling to expand their beer tastes beyond the Big Three. So, with that said, what did I think of "Tasting Beer?"

Well, there's a remarkable amount of information in its 247 pages, all of it presented in a very nicely integrated text-and-picture form. No matter what aspect of beer culture you're interested in, you'll find it covered to a useful level of detail in "Tasting Beer." Do you want to know more about the history of beer? It's in there, from 10,000 years BCE to the present, in a fascinating 22-page section. Do you want to improve your abilities to taste beer, and to accurately describe its qualities and complexity? It's in there--you'll learn how to distinguish 25 common flavors such as diacetyl, isoamyl acetate and fusels, and whether they're desirable or not. Are you interested in becoming more sophisticated in pairing beer with food? It's in there, both general guidelines and specific recommendations. Do you want to bone up on the bewildering variety of beer styles available? They're all in there, from the lightest adjunct lagers to Imperial stouts. Each style is described and characterized in great detail, including suggestions for which beers you should try that best represent the styles. There's a whole chapter on the modern American craft beer movement and its new styles such as wet-hopped ales, ultra-strong beers and other experimental types. I found the charts showing beer color, strength, etc., as a function of style to be especially interesting and useful, although all of the graphics and figures are exceptionally well done.

"Tasting Beer" is the best single volume of beer lore that I've read in many years. It is so good that a few of my other older beer books became redundant and have now found their way into the public library donation box. There should still be a place in the beer lover's inventory for such books as Roger Protz's "The Ale Trail" and Garrett Oliver's "The Brewmaster's Table: Discovering the Pleasures of Real Beer with Real Food." But if you own only one beer book, "Tasting Beer: An Insider's Guide to the World's Greatest Drink," should be it. Cheers!

Timothy A. Davis is an Associate Professor in Computer and Information Science and Engineering at the University of Florida. He is the author of a suite of sparse matrix packages that are widely used in industry, academia, and government research labs, and related articles in SIAM, ACM, and IEEE journals. He is the co-author of a well-used introduction to MATLAB, the MATLAB Primer (Chapman & Hall/CRC Press, 2005). He is a member of the editorial boards of the IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, and Computational Optimization and Applications.

Good concise refrence

Overall, I would say this is a pretty good book. I picked it up looking for something a bit deeper (and hopefully faster-executing) than what is found in the usual numerical analysis books, and that is what I got. Davis carefully steps through the code he developed, CSparse, from the bottom to the top. Sometimes the explanations are hard to follow, but I think that is because I'm an engineer, not a computer scientist, so my background really isn't on par with what it should be before reading this book.

The code (in C and/or Matlab) that is presented is very terse, and seems to combine as many operations per line as possible. If it weren't for the text, trying to understand what is going on in the code would be impossible. Spartan coding has its place, surely, but not in textbooks.

The book is missing two things. One, parallelism. Seriously- its 2008 (the fact that the book came out in 2006 doesn't change my claim)- multicore processors are everywhere, and clusters are becoming cheaper and more ubiquitous. If a reader is interested enough in this topic to want to take advantage of sparsity, chances are they want to solve large sparse linear systems. Second, the proof that's in the pudding is in the tasting. Davis only ever mentions the theoretical execution times of the various algorithms and pieces of algorithms. I would like to see a graph (that is, an x-y plot) of run time vs matrix size for the various methods (as well as the theoretical predictions). Not only that, but let's see it for a finite element problem with an unstructured mesh over a non-trivial geometry....you know, a real problem.

If nothing else, this book is a concise reference for the modern methods for treating sparse linear systems. The last book exclusive to the topic was some 20 years ago, and a lot of research has happened since then. If the algorithms presented in the book don't help you (which I doubt), then at least Davis cites several references to point you in the right direction.

Even when we know that there are issues with some parts of it between Ingrid and Bill, every page reveals amazing things about Jaco. Those stories have the power to immerse us in the life of the Greatest Bass Player in the World. From the beginning and the good moments, to the suffering of an unknown psychiatric illness. Jaco even now is the greatest, and his life shall be preserved through the memories that survived him and that are transmitted by Word of Mouth. Jaco shall live forever on all of us.

The Man or the Myth

Jaco Pastorious's story is a very interesting one; certainly fitting to the extremes of the American culture. Even if you are not a bass player, or even a musician, you should find Milkowsky's chronicle of Jaco an to be an interesting, emotionally charged, reading. However, I think a question is unconsiously brought up by the author. That is, just how far outa whack should you stretch your neck looking up towards Jaco? Honestly, the author is very one-sided about how he presents Jaco: Jaco was a very sweet man of a musical genious that most cannot begin to imagine. He was tormented by a mental disorder and it, unfortunately, caused the ruin ofhis career. The author makes it very clear that he sympathises with Jaco, that he, as best as he can, sees it from Jaco's point of view. I disagree though. I have known several of those who suffer from bi-polar disorder. They do find it hard to get along, but not like Jaco. I don't think his illness was his only problem. I! ! didn't know the man personally, but I don't think that disqualifies me as a critic of him. He made beautiful music, but that doesn't excuse his behaviour either. Milkowsky does a great job telling you how Jaco lived and died, but leaves the reader wondering just what Jaco's problem was. I think it makes the book even more interesting though.

As I read the book I was overcome with the sense that there wasn't anybody in Jaco's life that wanted to offer some substantial help in his recovery,( just for the sake of preserving one of the 20th century's greatest contemporary composers who had barely started to show the world as a whole what he stood for) but, rather just for the sake of making it to the next show to fatten someone's wallet. Unfortunately even that small percentage of help disappeared when his so-called friends and hanngers on lost intrest. Overall I think Bill Milkowski did a fantastic job of portraying Jaco's life story. He wrote the story as someone who missed a friend and not a business associate.Hats' off to him, and shame on those who caugth on only after it was too late and chose to opportunise on his music at the expense of his estate, (posthumously ofcourse).

Great book for learning on how to become a freelancer on Fiverr

Thanks to the internet, new opportunities have opened up for many people especially in the freelancing sector. The book talks about one such opportunity; a website called Fiverr. It about the basics of online freelancing and what to expect when working online with people around the world. The first few chapters talk about the different ways to promote yourself on the website to have more potential clients reach out to you which I believe was a nice part since the hardest part of being a beginner freelancer is establishing a clientele.

Other parts of the book talked about what to avoid doing as a freelancer as well as different tips on how to further improve yourself as a freelancer. It also discussed the different jobs that one can enter as an online freelancer such as being a virtual assistant or a designer/artist for a client. Overall, it's a well written book that talks about the benefits and dangers of being a freelancer.
