At sunrise on July 24th, 1715, a convoy consisting of twelve ships set sail from Havana Harbor for the long voyage back to Spain. The convoy was composed of the five ships of the New Spain Flota, six ships of the Squadron of Tierra Firme, and a French ship named Grifon. After the convoy left Havana it made its way up the Bahama Channel. During the night of July 30 it was struck by a fierce hurricane that wrecked all the ships upon the coast of Florida, with the exception of the Grifon, which miraculously escaped. Over a thousand persons lost their lives. The Spaniards commenced salvage operations immediately along the beach of what is commonly known today as Florida's Treasure Coast, so named for the fabulous trove left behind on the wrecks, which continues to lure treasure hunters today. The Spanish salvage effort was quite effective, however, much remains to be found, including the dowry of the consort queen, Isabella Farnese, wife of King Philip V. Robert Marx relates this story to us with an incisive historic background, completed with contemporary details known to him through almost forty years of his own efforts to salvage the wrecks of the 1715 Plate Fleet. This edition also includes a complete reprint of the shipwreck listings found in his original Shipwrecks in Florida Waters, published in 1968 when Robert Marx took over operations for Real 8.

A rodeo star, he has been honored with a postage stamp and has been the subject of a handful of books, including Bill Pickett, Bulldogger: The Biography of a Black Cowboy and Guts: Legendary Black Rodeo Cowboy Bill Pickett. Add to that list the children's book Bill Pickett: Rodeo Ridin' Cowboy by Andrea Pinkney. No matter how you feel about rodeo, it's hard not to admire Pickett, who was known to bring an unruly steer to its knees by taking a bite out of the animal's upper lip.

Kindergarten-Grade 3?Bill Pickett was a rodeo cowboy in the days when black men were not allowed to do much of anything that wasn't menial or demeaning. Pickett, however, followed his dream. As a young boy, he would watch cowboys herd cattle past his parents' farm and dream of becoming a cowboy. One day, Bill helped some cowboys bulldog a calf they were having trouble branding. They were suitably impressed with his skills, and there was no stopping him after that. By the age of 15, he had left home to work on ranches throughout Texas. His fame grew steadily, and eventually he was offered a job in a rodeo. After just a few years, he was famous throughout the country, even riding in Mexico, South America, and England. His fame not only helped popularize rodeo, but helped to give attention to a black man in a very racist time. This is a brilliantly done tribute to an unjustly forgotten pioneer. The text is fascinating, and the oil paintings on scratchboard are full of energy and motion, matching the book's powerful mood. Great Art, Story, and History

Bill Pickett was a famous cowboy and he was a child of slaves. He endured hardships and rose above them. Pickett's ability to bulldog was self taught by observing bull dogs bring down large steer and included biting an animal to bring him to his knees. This story is filled with excitement and history. Unfortunately, his story is not famous or well known until now.

The manner in which the story is told, is thrilling. The language is original and of those times. Once again the Pinkney name is responsible for captivating the children in my life. Regardless if the children love to read or not, they hold still, listen, ask questions, and ponder the illustrations searching each page to capture all the detail. The art leads children to the story, the story leads them to reading. Any Pinkney book results in an addiction to reading. The Black Cowboy by Lester and Pinkney is also a thrilling story for young readers.

Interesting for adults as well as children

Cowboys in old-time Westerns were always white. But, up to 30 percent of cowboys in history were African Americans. No one realized this throughout most of the 20th Century. Certainly not the general public. Now, finally, another true facet of American history is being revealed. Children's books that tell it like it really was and treat legendary African American heroes with the same level of charismatic stardom allotted Euro American cowboys are crucial. Here's a cool book kids of all ages can enjoy. But now we need the movie, too.

A beautiful text and illustration of the magic and science of Liver Transplantation

The Atlas of Liver Transplantation is a beautiful text that presents the science and art of liver transplantation to the world of academic medicine and beyond. Dr. Molmenti cleverly incorporates detailed illustrations that go above and beyond what the limitations of photography can provide in descriptive medical education.

This text is not limited merely to surgical technique but is a comprehensive approach to the whole space of liver transplantation including the supportive disciplines of anesthesia and hematology.

As a student of the History of Organ Transplantation I found this book to be the current state-of-the state presentation of this discipline. Not only is this a "must have" for any surgical resident considering this advanced field but a useful inclusion to the book shelf to any surgical resident, medical student or lover of academic medicine.

Like The Horse Whisperer, Gruen's polished debut is a tale of human healing set against the primal world of horses. The Olympic dreams of teenaged equestrian Annemarie Zimmer end when her beloved horse, Harry, injures her and destroys himself in a jumping accident. In the agonizing aftermath, she gives up riding and horses entirely. Two decades later, she returns to her family's horse farm a divorcee, with her troubled teenaged daughter, Eve, in tow. There, her gruff Germanic mother struggles to maintain the farm and care for Annemarie's father, who is stricken with ALS. Although Annemarie decides (disastrously) to manage the farm's business, her attention quickly turns to an old and ostensibly worthless horse with the same rare coloring as Harry. Her long-denied passion for riding reawakens as she tracks the horse's identity and eventually discovers it to be Harry's younger brother. She must heal both horse and herself as she struggles with her father's deterioration, Eve's rebellion and her attraction to both the farm's new trainer and her childhood sweetheart Dan. Impulsive and self-absorbed, Annemarie isn't always likable, but Gruen's portrait of the stoic elder Zimmers is beautifully nuanced, as is her evocation of Eve's adolescent troubles. Amid this realistically complex generational sandwich, the book's appealing horse scenes—depicted with unsentimental affection—help build a moving story of loss, survival and renewal.

Best new novelist I've read this year

Riding Lessons is so well crafted and written that it's astonishing to realize it's Gruen's first novel. The book is worth reading for the first breathless scene alone, but Gruen managed to keep me hooked throughout. I read it in two sittings (a girl's gotta eat), and it's now on my shelf of books that I look forward to reading again.
Annemarie's contemporary family issues ring painfully true, especially her relationship with her difficult mother and her rebellious daughter. But Gruen respects her reader and never resorts to typical solutions. Her father's illness is so poignantly rendered that I found myself biting my thumbnail as I read, aching for Annemarie. Gruen also manages a few deftly written comic scenes when Annemarie gets in over her head. The ending was perfect, no overwrought melodramatic scenes that first novelists can't seem to help, but a profound and moving, even elegant, wrap-up that left me fully satisfied.
I haven't been around horses very much, but the riding and stable scenes show that Gruen certainly has, and though the book appeals to everyone, horse people are going to absolutely love it. After a string of disappointing new novels on the shelves this year, Riding Lessons was a rare treat. Definitely looking forward to Gruen's next.

The accident, then three dominoes fall

Annemarie’s life through the first three chapters. Then she is left to cope for the next eighteen chapters with the consequences, the fallout, the bad decisions, the non-decisions, the foibles and fumbles of her mid-thirties years. Ride it out, Annemarie, and learn about Pappa, about Mutti, about Eva, about Dan, and eventually about yourself. Things the reader knew by the fifth chapter, Annemarie learns by the end. We learn to watch for the same symptoms in our own life-illnesses. Her “litany of disasters is like an Ohrwurm,” a tune you hear over and over again in your ear, an undying repetition of the same tune, perhaps in a different key in later chapters, but the theme rides up over itself repeatedly into our consciousness. We cannot believe that the woman, otherwise sentient and thoughtful, can remember so vividly and still be so forgetful. It stretched the suspension of my unbelief from time to time, but Annemarie is my Schatzlein, too. My eye, along with Mutti’s, turns away, but my heart never gave up on her. She reminds me too strongly of people I love, and even of myself at times. Fine writing, evocative, penetrating, and finally true.

Little girls and their horses

I am bothered by the first chapter where the horse, in organized competition, jumped over the fence and landed his full weight on his fetlock which shattered and sent his rider, a little girl, into a coma and body cast for months. I was glad that the girl didn't jump to her feet hollaring "That was fun! Let's do it again!" And so the story is committed to the question, what happens when she has a little girl of her own who grows up dreaming of a horse of her own? Just to narrow her choices she returns to her parents' horse-riding academy where her dad is dying and her mother never understood why she didn't saddle up at her earliest opportunity. I mean what for God's sake is wrong with this girl? And then, get a grip, she meets a horse identical to the one who died in chapter one. Spooky.

Wolfgang Streeck is the director of the Max Planck Institute for Social Research in Cologne and Professor of Sociology at the University of Cologne. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics and a member of the Berlin Brandenburg Academy of Sciences as well as the Academia Europaea.

The Debt State vs Democracy

In this useful book Wolfgang Streeck presents images of post 2008 democratic capitalism around his Tax State/ Debt State idea.

Speaking of the West, the Tax State covers the post WW2 period to the late 1970's showing manageable budget deficits, government spending on infrastructure, balanced corporate and union power and general national unity policies with a leftist slant that he clearly approves of.

The Debt State is a different animal involving what he calls the financialization of society. Basically he sees a radically changed world of instant communication and enormously increased competition with Western states unable to afford the welfare commitments that date from their industrial leadership. So what to do?

Streeck sees Neoliberalism giving birth to a Debt State in which private and government deficits are "financed" at low interest rates and savers are more or less obliged to take on more debt and speculate in the face of near zero returns on their capital. He records the way that public debt ballooned until 1993, private debt led to the internet (2000) and housing/banking (2008) collapses and how oceans of government QE credit are now giving us the current "recovery".

The core of the book is an interesting discussion of the way in which the Debt State interacts with Democracy.

Essentially debtors lose freedom whether they are individuals or governments, and he shows the neoliberal totemization of Market Confidence above all else, and the absolute abuse of this concept to cow politicians into accepting the whole neoliberal package of unrestricted movement of capital (with the associated threat), unlimited freedom to outsource, and the requirement that the public give 100% backing to the craziest leveraged Wall Street bets.

So far so good, but the author then suggests a dubious solution in returning to the Tax State when (in the opinion of this reviewer) he could have devoted more space to the fundamental issues of outsourcing and economic efficiency + a more positive views of the European Union. Just because it's been captured by "Marktvolk" doesn't mean that it's a bad idea.

This reviewer personally witnessed the Tax State of Great Britain in the early 1970's with high personal taxation, out of control government spending, Keynesianism, nationalization and a Social Contract in the context of an activist Socialist/ Marxist government. As Burk and Cairncross show in their worthwhile book "Goodbye, Great Britain: The 1976 IMF Crisis" it was a spectacular failure. Great Britain (1974-76) had the highest inflation in Europe, the lowest rise in GNP, the highest unemployment and the lowest output per man/hour in manufacturing and was seen to fail on all counts.

The author is somewhat surprised that Germany still has a successful manufacturing sector and could maybe have incorporated this observation into a broader discussion of outsourcing. Outsourcing (complete international economic freedom) is a central plank of Neoliberalism and is arguably the root cause of structural Western unemployment (and record corporate profits) and the collapse of the Tax State. If CEO's like Jack Welch have for years been applying his 70/70/70 rule (70% of research and development should be outsourced, 70% of that should be outsourced offshore, 70% should be outsourced overseas and sent to India) then surely this reduces employment and skills and generates budget and trade deficits.

The author seems to be too focused on Keynesianism vs Neoliberalism when in reality the debate has probably moved on. For example Joseph Heath in his valuable book "Economics Without Illusions: Debunking the Myths of Modern Capitalism" suggests that the Left and Right have both developed a malignant form of their respective ideologies. The Left has extended costly government "care" to whole sections of the adult population that like it but shouldn't receive it. The Right tries to dispense with government altogether and doesn't recognize that it is a vital framework for growth.

Heath also observes that at a fundamental level, societal/economic efficiency is not a Left/Right issue at all and is basically non-political. Your chosen system either gives you good value health care or it doesn't.

On page 172, Streeck says that, "In the Social World one never steps in the same river twice", which is probably true but there are still some striking similarities between the USA of 2014 and Germany of 1918 and his book has a notable Spengler like feel in its opposition of Staatsvolk (social justice) and Marktvolk (market justice). Both countries had/have intractable debts, a dominant market class, democratic gridlock, out of control special interests and failed taxation and both are resorting/resorted to covering current spending with money printing.

The difference is that Streeck sees salvation in a return to a Tax State whereas Spengler saw it in, "the final battle between Democracy and Caesarism, between the leading forces of dictatorial money-economics and the purely political will-to-order of the Caesars". An interesting difference.

With regard to Europe he seems unduly pessimistic. The EEC has brought peace, the free movement of labour and a single currency which do have some positive aspects which he ignores. Also, even the strongest critics of Europe (such as Nigel Farage of the UK Independence Party) are often not at all personally hostile to their fellow Europeans. They actually quite like Europe and only object to the grossly inefficient special interest Neoliberal Market Construction that has taken control of the project.

Nevertheless, this is certainly a key book in the conversation about the Debt State/ Democracy and is highly recommended.

WOW everything I didn't know about growing and incorporating leafy greens in our lives. I was shocked at the nutritional value of greens, specially the protein of dried leaf concentrate. This book goes from the cellular level of plants along to some nice recipes. Thorough explanations and alternatives and data. All questions were answered including how to hide greens in foods for picky eaters and grow year round in colder climates.
Big garden changer for me.

More manifesto about commercial food growth than useful content

I purchased the book looking forward to diversifying what I grow in the garden. The first chapter that starts to discuss alternatives to grow doesn't begin until page 97, and includes some common crops. There are some summary listings for several plants that were of interest, with details on a few more. If you are looking for horticultural information on growing green leafy vegetables, a web search and your local extension office are good resources. The author's foundation sounds like a great cause, but it's not why I purchased the book. Recipes start on page 215, and there are sections on setting up a garden, vertical gardening and preservation also in the book (before the recipes).

Martin-Baro was a Spanish-born Jesuit priest and a University of Chicago-trained psychologist, teacher, and administrator at El Salvador's Universidad Centroamericana. Along with five other Jesuits, their housekeeper, and her teenaged daughter, he was murdered by soldiers in November 1989. The murders outraged the world. Having lived in a country where poverty and government oppression was the norm, Martin-Baro's aim in his work and writing was always human liberation. For the first translation of his writings into English, the editors have selected various journal articles from his long career. Most poignantly, Martin-Baro argues that traditional psychology's image of the human person is falsely abstract and fails to consider the real-life social and economic conditions that form people. Not in the line of traditional social psychology, these essays nonetheless offer an important argument from an important man. Recommended especially for academic collections in psychology or social theory.

Canonize This Man, Please

Ignacio Martin-Baro is probably better known in the U.S. as one of the slain Jesuit priests of El Salvador than as the ingenious psychologist that he was. Aron and Corne do U.S. psychologists, who are more often than not barred by their lack of facility with the Spanish language from a large body of important psychological literature, a huge favor by editing this carefully chosen and lovingly prepared volume of his translated works. Because the writings they have selected span the period from 1974, shortly before Martin-Baro initiated graduate work at the University of Chicago, to 1989, when he was murdered, we as readers are able to observe the maturation of his perspective as well as the many ways he applied his psychological knowledge and training in what can only be described as a "limit situation"-- namely, El Salvador in the late l970s through the mid 1980s. In these works, Martin-Baro addressed several themes of increasing global significance, including the effects political repression on the human psyche, the effects of war on children, the relation between religious ideology and political activity, and the nature of industrial psychology from the perspective of the under- and unemployed. Of greatest significance to psychologists, however, were his overarching themes, namely, the collusive role of mainstream psychology in human oppression and the necessary role of the psychologist in human liberation. Borrowing from Freire's famed concept of conscientizacao, Martin-Baro demonstrated how psychologists can act as agents of the development of critical consciousness, both through their nurturance of individuals in the process of psychological healing and development and through their interventions, as privileged and powerful members of society, upon the diseased socio-economic/political system itself. Through their insightful, passionate, and well-researched commentary, Aron and Corne demonstrate that Martin-Baro indeed lived and died by his praxis, proving that psychology's current state of critical inertia is not a necessary condition. In my opinion, Martin-Baro is destined to become the patron saint of psychology--and, boy, does it need one.
