great book

I took up painting a few month ago... as a child growing up it was always my dream to be able to draw and paint.. I'm 33 now, and just finished my masters degree. My Masters, which required a lot of reading really opened up my mind and gave me the confidence in feeling that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to. In fact, I have set out to tackle all my life's dreams which I thought were impossible before. I bought so far, something like 10 books on drawing, sketching, painting, etc... After trying to draw and paint a beautiful urban scene from Denmark, I realized it was much harder than expected... I set out to buy a book on perspective lines... This book as served me well... it carries with it several different examples... if you study the book well, you will be able to draw a rather small town...with a curvy road, that is hilly... which is what I was looking for... The author gives you a great deal of knowledge in understanding how scenes are constructed... In the world however there are endless examples, and clearly he couldn't cover everything... I would have liked to see examples with cars, peoples, and boats... that is why I only gave it 4 stars... but if you want to know how to place buildings and roads... this is the book for you. Either way, you will learn a lot.

This is a great book that can help any painter or drawer improve ...

This is a great book that can help any painter or drawer improve their skills. The author, Phil Metzger, has a gentle and encouraging style. He'll explain the general concepts and then make clear that the artist can break the rules--it's art, after all. He turns rules into "make sense to me" ideas that will probably last in my mind longer than a list of hard rules. There are some exercises to try and plenty of examples. This will be a part of my permanent library.

Worth a look.

Okay book. So many out there on perspective and each presents the info in their own way. This point of view is from a painter's approach. But the information is the same as in any perspective book. Obviously the subject can be a complex one and not easy to master. Thus, any book that can be used to teach aspiring artists how to understand and apply the principles of perspective is worthwhile. This ranks with others that any artist might want to explore. It is well written and clear, if not ground shakingly inspiring. Would give it 3 1/2 if possible.

Great illustrations, awesome scope!

I bought these texts for my classroom (since we have no budget and no books) based off of another Amazon buyer's recommendation, and I'm so glad that I did. Thank you, whoever said that it was an outstanding text! You're right. The National Geographic additions really help to capture wandering student attention, and the writing is clear and a little challenging for 8th graders. Lots of chapter reviews, which I appreciated, as well as test prep questions and vocabulary word banks. Good stuff!

a great text

I am using this book for homeschooling. It is well written, detailed and readable. I like the way it is organized, so it makes teaching Science pretty easy for me. We are just following this book as a framework, and supplementing with hands on investigations (such as identifying rocks, etc.) and intenet investigations (such as weather patterns, plate tectonics, etc.), just to show some real applications of this information.

Earth Science: Geology, the Environment, and the Universe, Student Edition

We bought this earth science book because it is used in our child's ninth grade earth science class. It is magnificent and has a readable text profusely illustrated with colored photographs, maps, and charts; and a great table of contents, index, and glossary. We would want it for our home library even if it were not used in school. We are pleased with our "like new" used copy that we obtained through Amazon. It is very convenient to have this rather heavy book at home, thus saving our child from having to carry it back and forth to school.

I remember the Beanie Baby craze!

It was such a fun trip down memory lane! I remember the Beanie craze and although I was not a crazed collector (I only own 6 Beanies to this day and only bought the ones I really liked because I liked them not becuase I thought they would be valuable) it was fun to look back.. the book has every Beanie as of 1998 in it, their poems, and their "projected" values! It is amazing to me what people spent on them... In spite of the craze the fact remains that Beanies are incredibly cute and after seeing all of them in this book there might be a few I will look for here on Amazon to add to my small collection. A great way to remember Beanies and look back on the fun that turned into a craze and then crashed like the Internet stock bubble! (An interesting book to go along with this one is called "The Great Beanie Baby Bubble" and that interesting book describes all that went on that led people to spend hundreds or thousands on Beanies and how the craze started, peaked, and then crashed suddenly. A good read!

I havent read the first couple of editions of this book but I found this one to come in handy. I collect Beanie Babies for my 8 year old neice and I use this book to keep track of the ones she has and the ones she desperatley wants!...I'm sure the prices are off a bit but who of you knows how much money a plush toy with a perfect tag will be in the year 2000!!?? Chill...The Authors are just estimating.
Of all the Beanie Babie books that I have seen out there, I feel that this book is the best and that it is funny and interesting. One thing I would do in the next addition would be to leave out all the extra fluff of games and food and just stick to the Beanie Babie stuff. Also, the authors might want to lighten up on all the family/self photograpghs....We want to see Beanie Babies...Not your family album!

Alot of people I know liked this book, and I do too. I have the 1997 and 1998 edition, and they were great! How can people not like it? I do agree, the retirements were way off, but I still enjoyed reading it! There is no reason for people to critizize the book because I would like to see them write their own book THEIR way! LOL! I love beanie babies, Me and my friends have been collecting for a long time. They are just so cute and adorable, you just fall in love with them! I can't wait for The fall 1998 edition to come out. It will have the new beanies in it and the newely retireds!!! I will definately love this book too!

Good, well writen book. the included CD-ROM is also good. I was looking for some 'norms' and one of the only places that had the lower intestinal fortitude to include them was this CD. Is this book as good or better than some of the other texts out there (Oh or Kimura) No, but it is still usefull.

Delving deeper into Tibetan Buddhism

July 2014: Since writing many book reviews of the past, much has changed, I have discovered much more. I have come to see and have had exposed many of the deceptions and errors associated with Gnosticism, this even after becoming a Gnostic priest. My faith in Christ has been my anchor and I press on with him who shed his blood for me. I am tempted to delete many of my reviews, as I have already done; time will tell.

Lama Anagarika Govinda, a German who spent over twenty years studying at the feet of masters in Tibetan hermitages and monasteries, a member of the Kargyutpa order, brings to us much of Tibetan Esotericism in this book. In this book, Lam Anagarika Govinda clarifies many misconceptions regarding Tibetan Buddhism, mantra and more specifically, the mantra `Om Mani Padme Om'.

Essentially this book is a breakdown of the mantra `Om Mani Padme Hum' or rather `Om Mani Peme hum' according to the phonetic laws of the Tibetan language I.e. Part One `Om' The Path of Universality. Part Two `Mani' The Path of Unification and of Inner Equality. Part Three `Padma' The Path of Creative Vision. Part Four `Hum' The Path of Integration. Part Five `Om Mani Padme Hum' The Path of the Great Mantra.

The author discusses many topics such as mantra, the history of mantra and the power of the verb, the five skandhas the doctrine of consciousness, the psychic centres of the kundalini-yoga and their physiological counterparts, the chakras, physical and psychic functions of prana and the principle of motion (vayu) as starting-point of meditation, transversing the Bardo, the three currents of force and their channels in the human body i.e. Ida, pingala and susumna, the Tantras, the yoga of the inner fire in the Tibetan system of meditation (Tapas & Gtum-mo) and the Tibetan wheel of life etc. I can only recall one practice given in this book and this is a description as given in the `Tractate of the six doctrines'; see page 170-178. This practice deals with Mantra visualisation and raising the Kundalini, I make note of this here for those of you who are interested and for my benefit when I look for these pages again for when I might attempt this practice myself.

I especially enjoyed the latter part of this book which provided excellent information on thousand armed Avalokitesvara (the embodiment of active compassion) and Avalokitesvara's descent into the six realms of this world. This then followed on with information regarding the path of the Bodhisattvas I.e. the path of renunciation and sacrifice for humanity. The book ends with information on the fifth Dhyani-Buddha, the Lord of the all-encompassing wisdom, this essentially deals with `Ah', The Path of Action, "the fact that the Buddha's teachings is not some nebulous idealism, a chasing after eternal but unattainable ideals, but a doctrine of self realisation, of action, a practical doctrine, a path that can be trodden by all who are seriously bent on its aim."

This book also clarifies the differences between Hindu and Tibetan yoga. "A comparison of the Hindu Tantras with those of Buddhism (which are mostly preserved in Tibet and which therefore have long remained unnoticed by Indologists) not only shows an astonishing divergence of methods and aims, in spite of external similarities, but proves the spiritual and historical priority and originality of the Buddhist Tantras." Pg 94

As a student of Gnosis, this book filled in some blanks for me. I plan to continue reading other books on Tibetan Buddhism and especially those books made reference to by Lama Anagarika Govinda in this book I.e. `Tibet's Great Yogi Milarepa', `Tibetan Yoga & Secret Doctrines', `The Tibetan Book of the Great Liberation' (Evans-Wentz) and also `The Serpent Power' (Avalon, Arthur).

Rather technical, good scope

This is a fine book by a 20th century practitioner, a German who became a Buddhist monk in a SE Asia monastery and traveled through Tibet with his wife Li Gotami (who published a book of fascinating photographs). The author is probably best known for both this work, which is probably a modern classic, and for "The Way of the White Clouds" a more personal description of Buddhism. He also wrote "A Living Buddhism for the West." The latter two books reflect his personal approach making them more easily comprehended and accessible than many texts from Tibetan Buddhist masters. This book, however, is far less accessible, but its topic may preclude a more personal approach. It covers a lot of territory though it is quite technical in many places. It provides an extensive and detailed description of the five Dyani (meditation) Buddhas and their families-the best I've seen. Many modern texts merely allude to these or mention one or two of them (e.g. Akshoba or Amitabha). It's not an easy read.

If you wish to explore the word and symbol, this profoundly spiritual volume leads one there. Om, universal consciousness, and all the dhyana Buddhas are presented with clarity and understanding. What's more, the poetry in which Lama Govinda moves and winds this classic work is a tribute to the man's artistry in painting wisdom as something within everyone's reach.
