Great read!

I only got interested in longevity research recently. However, I have had time to absorb quite a bit of the current state of the art.

As far as I can tell, there is not much you can do to "stop the clock", though you can "delay aging" to a point... for example, by staying thin, exercising and eating reasonably well... There are some credible claims that "caloric restriction" might help, though the evidence is weak in human beings. As far as supplements are concerned, the evidence that they can prolong life is... weak or very weak...

The author runs an excellent blog on the topic and I was looking forward to his book.

I was pleasantly surprised. The writing is excellent. As far as I can tell, the author remains true to what has been scientifically established, though he makes some reasonable extrapolations (for example, fasting in moderation probably helps staying young).

I think that if the topic interests you, you should purchase the book for the writing alone. It is a quick read and it will make you think.

I should add a general caveat: the problem with such a topic is that information is coming in regularly. That is, we still know very little about how to live longer... and we are learning something new almost every day... So this book will probably need regular updates to remain useful.

Nitpicking:

* The author might want to revise the text as there are some minor repetitions that could be avoided. It would make the text even better.

* The evidence regarding resveratrol is weak. I think that the author, through his book, makes the case for resveratrol much stronger than it is. As far as I can tell, no independent study has shown that resveratrol can prolong life in otherwise healthy mammals. I suspect that resveratrol is ineffective and thus, wasted money. Thankfully, the author is otherwise conservative regarding supplement advocacy...

A questionable hypothesis

The book posits an anti-aging strategy involving: stay active, BMI 20-21, high intensity training, extremely low carb diet, phytochemicals, .8g/kg protein and intermittent fasting. No doubt some of these are no-brainers, but the supposition that this is an optimal path to longevity is questionable at best. His understanding of hormesis (P16) is patently wrong (low-dose of a poison or stress does not have "unhealthy effect" and high dose is not "high hormesis"). And no, the antioxidants in fruits (p25) are not "in reality toxic agents", as fruits are "designed" to be eaten by animals. Ultra-low carb is a very questionable approach to longevity. BMI 20-21 is far from optimal for >65 year olds as the optimal range for longevity in a recent meta-study is 23-29.9! The book does not address some of the obvious longevity issues such as vitamin D and many more. I do not understand the 5-star rating of the other reviewers.

I cannot recommend this book (as well as Mangan's other readings) highly ...

I am 42 years old, have been following Mr. Mangan's blog for about a year, and have also purchased all of his e-books. By incorporating his recommendations, I have seen incredible results with regards to physical and mental health, as well as appearance. I am currently a grad student surrounded by students 15-20 years younger than me. I get repeated comments (mainly from women) that I look younger and healthier than the majority of my male counterparts. I highly recommend this book (as well as Mangan's other readings) for anyone who wants to thwart the aging process and achieve a high level of mental and physical health.

About the Author
Diane Larsen-Freeman is Professor Emerita of Education, Professor Emerita of Linguistics, and Former Director of the English Language Institute at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She is also a Distinguished Senior Faculty Fellow at the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. Dr. Larsen-Freeman has been a conference speaker in over 60 countries of the world and has published over 100 articles in her areas of interest. Her Heinle/Cengage titles include "The Grammar Book: Form, Meaning, and Use for English Language Teachers" (third edition, 2015, co-authored with Marianne Celce-Murcia), "From Grammar to Grammaring" (2003, authored), and the fourth edition of "Grammar Dimensions: Form, Meaning, and Use" (2007, Series Director). From 1980-1985, Dr. Larsen-Freeman was Editor of the journal "Language Learning." In 1997, Dr. Larsen-Freeman was inducted into the Vermont Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1999, she was selected by ESL Magazine as one of "the ESL pioneers." In 2000, she received the lifetime achievement award from Heinle & Heinle.

Excellent tool in the fight against prescriptivism and learning by rote

This book is a breath of fresh air. First, it constantly challenges the reader to reassess their own view of language and the impact of that view on the way they teach. Second, it provides an approach to teaching that does not rely on grammar drills and rote memorization, a paradigm that is far too prevalent and almost always proves boring and disheartening to both teacher and student. The book gives me hope that language teaching practices and curriculum can continue to evolve to better serve the malleability of language itself.

Ms. Larsen-Freeman is not content to review past theories and pedagogical practices. Instead, she reminds us that language theories are constantly evolving, as is language itself. It is difficult to find one narrow definition of language and an associated teaching practice that will suffice. Grammar is more than a list of rules to memorize; the author introduces the idea of "grammaring," an idea of grammar as more dynamic and constantly evolving. Thus, the way we teach grammar (and language as a whole) should reflect that.

However, in addition to shunning rote memorization teaching practices, Larsen-Freeman also cautions against the opposite extreme, which is disavowing all formal grammar instruction in favor of a more organic method based on models of real life language acquisition. She reminds us that language teaching should not just mimic natural language acquisition, but augment and accelerate it, and formal instruction of grammatical structures--when taught with proper appreciation of their dynamic properties--does play a strong role in teaching language.

I recommend this book to anyone just starting off in the fields of language teaching or language acquisition, as well as anyone who is frustrated with outdated teaching practices and arbitrary prescriptivism.

Understanding Grammar

This book doesn't provide grammar activities or explain grammar rules. What you will get is an understanding of what grammar really is. Grammar is not just the rules that your English teacher taught you back in high school. It is much more than rules. This book presents how grammar is viewed through Second Language Acquisition Theory. Also the author dismisses some common preconceptions about grammar that may be holding teachers back from understanding what grammar really is--a dynamic process. To gain a better understanding of this process, I recommend that teachers pick up this book. It's not so thick, so it should be a quick read.

The kind of distressing book you NEED to read...

Eric Arthur Blair was an important English writer that you probably already know by the pseudonym of George Orwell. He wrote quite a few books, but many believe that his more influential ones were "Animal farm" (1944) and "1984" (1948).In those two books he conveyed, metaphorically and not always obviously, what Soviet Russia meant to him.

I would like to make some comments about the second book, "1984". That book was written near his death, when he was suffering from tuberculosis, what might have had a lot to do with the gloominess that is one of the essential characteristics of "1984". The story is set in London, in a nightmarish 1984 that for Orwell might well have been a possibility, writting as he was many years before that date. Or maybe, he was just trying to warn his contemporaries of the dangers of not opposing the Soviet threat, a threat that involved a new way of life that was in conflict with all that the English held dear.

Orwell tried to depict a totalitarian state, where the truth didn't exist as such, but was merely what the "Big Brother" said it was. Freedom was only total obedience to the Party, and love an alien concept, unless it was love for the Party. The story is told from the point of view of Winston Smith, a functionary of the Ministry of Truth whose work involved the "correction" of all records each time the "Big Brother" decided that the truth had changed. The Party slogan said that "Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past", and they applied it constantly by "bringing up to date" the past so as to make it coincide with whatever the Party wanted.

From Winston Smith's point of view, many things that scare us are normal. For example, the omnipresence of the "Big Brother", always watching you, and the "Thought Police" that punishes treacherous thoughts against the Party. The reader feels the inevitability of doom that pervades the book many times, in phrases like "Thoughtcrime was not a thing that could be concealed forever. You might dodge successfully for a while, even for years, but sooner or later they were bound to get you".

Little by little, Winston begins to realize that things are not right, and that they should change. We accompany him in his attempt at subversion, and are unwilling witnesses of what that attempt brings about. This book is marked by hopelessness, but at the same time it is the kind of distressing book we all NEED to read...

Why do we need to read "1984"?. In my opinion, basically for two reasons. To start with, Orwell made in this book many observations that are no more merely fiction, but already things that manage to reduce our freedom. Secondly, and closelly linked to my first reason, this is a book that only gets better with the passing of time, as you can read in it more and more implications. One of Orwell's main reasons for writting this "negative utopia" might have been to warn his readers against communism, but many years after his death and the fall of communism, we can also interpret it as a caution against the excessive power of mass media, or the immoderate power of any government (even those who don't defend communism).

Technological innovation should be at the service of men, and allow them to live better lives, but it can be used against them. I guess that is one of Orwell's lessons, probably the most important one. All in all, I think you can benefit from reading this book. Because of that, I highly recommend it to you :)

Big Brother is watching you - read this book and see how!

George Orwell's classic was incredibly visionary. It is hardly fathomable that this book was written in 1948. Things that we take for granted today - cameras everywhere we go, phones being tapped, bodies being scanned for weapons remotely - all of these things were described in graphic detail in Orwell's book.
Now that we have the Internet and people spying on other people w/ webcams and people purposely setting up their own webcams to let others "anonymously" watch them, you can see how this culture can develop into the Orwellian future described in "1984."
If you've heard such phrases as "Big Brother," "Newspeak," and "thought crime" and wondered where these phrases came from, they came from this incredible, vivid and disturbing book.
Winston Smith, the main character of the book is a vibrant, thinking man hiding within the plain mindless behavior he has to go through each day to not be considered a thought criminal. Everything is politically correct, children defy their parents (and are encouraged by the government to do so) and everyone pays constant allegiance to "Big Brother" - the government that watches everyone and knows what everyone is doing at all times - watching you shower, watching you having sex, watching you eat, watching you go to the bathroom and ultimately watching you die.
This is a must-read for everyone.

The History Lesson You Wish you Had

George Orwell's final novel, 1984, was written amidst the anti-communist hysteria of the cold war. But unlike Orwell's other famous political satire, Animal Farm, this novel is filled with bleak cynicism and grim pessimism about the human race. When it was written, 1984 stood as a warning against the dangerous probabilities of communism. And now today, after communism has crumbled with the Berlin Wall; 1984 has come back to tell us a tale of mass media, data mining, and their harrowing consequences.
It's 1984 in London, a city in the new überstate of Oceania, which contains what was once England, Western Europe and North America. Our hero, Winston Smith works in the Ministry of Truth altering documents that contradict current government statements and opinions. Winston begins to remember the past that he has worked so hard to destroy, and turns against The Party. Even Winston's quiet, practically undetectable form of anarchism is dangerous in a world filled with thought police and the omnipresent two-way telescreen. He fears his inevitable capture and punishment, but feels no compulsion to change his ways.
Winston's dismal observations about human nature are accompanied by the hope that good will triumph over evil; a hope that Orwell does not appear to share. The people of Oceania are in the process of stripping down the English language to its bones. Creating Newspeak, which Orwell uses only for examples and ideas which exist only in the novel. The integration of Newspeak into the conversation of the book. One of the new words created is doublethink, the act of believing that two conflicting realities exist. Such as when Winston sees a photograph of a non-person, but must reason that that person does not, nor ever has, existed.

The inspiration for Winston's work ,may have come from Russia. Where Stalin's right-hand man, Trotzky was erased from all tangible records after his dissention from the party. And the fear of telescreens harks back to the days when Stasi bugs were hooked to every bedpost, phone line and light bulb in Eastern Europe.

His reference to Hitler Youth, the Junior Spies, which trains children to keep an eye out for thought criminals- even if they are their parents; provides evidence for Orwell's continuing presence in pop culture. "Where men can't walk, or freely talk, And sons turn their fathers in." is a line from U2's 1993 song titled "The Wanderer".

Orwell assumes that we will pick up on these political allusions. But the average grade 11 student will probably only have a vague understanding of these due to lack of knowledge. It is even less likely that they will pick up on the universality of these happenings, like the fact that people still "disappear" without a trace every day in Latin America.

Overall, however, the book could not have been better written. Orwell has created characters and events that are scarily realistic. Winston's narration brings the reader inside his head, and sympathetic with the cause of the would-be-rebels. There are no clear answers in the book, and it's often the reader who has to decide what to believe. But despite a slightly unresolved plot, the book serves its purpose. Orwell wrote this book to raise questions; and the sort of questions he raised have no easy answer. This aspect can make the novel somewhat of a disappointment for someone in search of a light read. But anyone prepared to not just read, but think about a novel, will get a lot out of 1984.

1984, is not a novel for the faint of heart, it is a gruesome, saddening portrait of humanity, with it's pitfalls garishly highlighted. Its historic importance has never been underestimated; and it's reemergence as a political warning for the 21st century makes it deserving of a second look. Winston's world of paranoia and inconsistent realities is an eloquently worded account of a future we thought we buried in our past; but in truth may be waiting just around the corner.

Boxes interspersed throughout the text discuss methods used to study the structure of the eye and surgical procedures used to alter its structure in beneficial ways. In addition to the main theme of structure and function, several subthemes make the general point, in different ways, that the eye and our understanding of it are dynamic and changing. Change on a geological timescale is represented by the evolutionary history of eyes generally and the human eye's place among the diversity of eyes in the animal kingdom; these issues are discussed in the Prologue. Change within a human lifetime begins with a chapter about the early stages of development in utero, continues throughout the book with the developmental histories of different parts of the eye, and concludes, in the Epilogue, with accounts of postnatal growth, maturation, and senescence. Change throughout human history in the way we have understood our eyes is another story, fragments of which are contained in a series of "vignettes" about some of the people and ideas that have influenced human thought about the eye over the past several thousand years.

The Human Eye; Structure and Function, Clyde W. Oyster

This is an excellent book which covers comprehensively the structure and function of the human eye as its subtitle implies. The selection of subject matter is balanced, clearly presented and well illustrated. The book is sprinkled with interesting illustrated historical vignettes reminiscent of those in the classical Duke-Elder, which add, for me at least, valuable sparkle to the corresponding text. The book will be of great value to students studying the eye, professionals in the field, and perhaps equally to health professionals and students in other fields, or to any sophisticated reader looking for an up to date summary of the subject. There is an excellent expanded table of contents which can be browsed to get a quick overview of the text. Researchers will enjoy the book, but will not find specific references to the topic covered though there are comprehensive lists of sources for further reading. This is a book which deserves to be on the shelf of any collection of books about the eye

Brilliant

This book is a well-written and wonderful example of scholarship at its best. The author draws from a tremendous breadth of research to generate a comprehensive understanding of the eye and its intricacies. Moreover, the writing is sufficiently well developed to make the text engaging and highly readable. Oyster imparts a remarkable enthusiasm for his material and does so by integrating aspects of cell biology, optics, pathology, anatomy and neurobiology. This is an excellent work and a pleasure to read.

Aunque la gramática pudiera mejorar un poco, esta es una gran historia que me alegro de haber leído. Ojalá hubiera indicación de que Centauri es el segundo de la serie. Muy recomendable historia de Alberto Meneses!
