About the Author

Vallath has more than 26 years of IT experience including over 20 years using Oracle products. Vallath is an Oracle ACE Director and president of All India Oracle Users Group (www.aioug.org). He has worked on a variety of database platforms for small to very large implementations, designing databases for high volume, machine critical, real time OLTP systems. His expertise is with Oracle RAC. Vallath released his second book titled Oracle 10g RAC, Grid, Services and Clustering in March 2006 and has co-authored his third book titled Oracle Automatic Storage Management (ASM) November 2007, from Oracle Press. Vallath currently provides independent consulting services in the areas of capacity planning, high availability solutions and performance tuning of Oracle environments through Summersky Enterprises (www.summersky.biz) with operations in USA and India. He has successfully completed over 100 successful small, medium and terabyte sized RAC implementations for reputed corporate firms. His recent experiences are with archiving historical data for datamarts on Exadata servers. Valid and inexpensive ADHD rating scale.

Description: The ADHD IV Manual enables one to discover if a school-aged child or teen has ADHD. The manual includes parent and teacher rating forms for ADHD, and norms for boys and girls at different ages.

Background: ADHD is usually diagnosed using the standard for psychiatric diagnoses, the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Forth Edition" (DSM-IV). These criteria are based on and revised to reflect the most recent research. By norming the DSM-IV criteria for ADHD, Professor DuPaul made the diagnosis of ADHD far easier and more reliable.

Expert Recommendation: I first bought the ADHD-IV manual when a well-known investigator on the treatment of ADHD, Russ Barkley of Harvard University, recommended the ADHD-IV checklist at the Sandestin, Florida ADHD conference in 2000.

This test costs less: Dr. DuPaul's test protocol cannot be copyrighted because he used the DSM-IV criteria as the text of this test. So, there's no additional expense for using the test beyond the purchase price of the manual. One doesn't have to pay more for extra test protocols. The SNAP and the Connors Rating Scales are good tests of ADHD, but they add a cost for protocols. The Connors Rating Scales starter kit cost from five to ten times the price of the ADHD-IV manual and requires that one pay approximately $2 for each additional form.

Drawback- the ADHD-IV has no medication scale.

Importance of medication: In the late 1990s, the Multimodal Treatment studies compared the effectiveness of every known promising treatment for ADHD, pooling subjects from many medical schools across the US. The Multimodal studies found that titrating stimulant medication was, by far, the most effective treatment for ADHD. Psychological treatments can add by further improving both treatment effectiveness and long-term results.

Limits of Medication: According to Bill Pelham of the University of Buffalo, stimulant medications appear to "normalize" ADHD children, but doesn't treat all symptoms. Carolyn Webster-Stratton of the University of Washington showed that helping these children learn to recognize emotions and to respond well to problem situations can produce an impressively better long-term outcome.

Cautions about medication: Bill Pelham (called `Mr. Ritalin' on the television-newsmagazine 20-20) said that overmedication of stimulants should be suspected if the child loses his or her sparkle. If a child diagnosed as ADHD gets worse when given stimulant medication, more easily angered or hyper, one might be wise to have the child evaluated to rule out a possible bipolar disorder. If stimulant medication increases tics or cursing, rule out Tourette's Syndrome. If medication doesn't help and the child is obsessed with specific topics, has severe interpersonal problems and tremendous difficulty recognizing the emotions of others, rule out Asperberger's Syndrome. Asperberger's is like ADHD on steroids. It has symptoms similar to that of ADHD, but to an extreme. It is quite rare, but early intervention can help.

Connors included a medication scale: The Connors Rating Scales have a subscale that measures the effect of medication on ADHD. That scale may make the Connors more useful for titrating medication. However, as noted before, the Connors Scales are much more expensive.

In summary, the ADHD-IV scale is the most cost-effective instrument available for screening for ADHD. It's derivation from the DSM-IV makes it valid and reliable. The cost of using it is limited to the price of the manual.

Cycling an average of 90km a day, often in extreme conditions on badly-maintained gravel and sand roads, being thrown into jail in Equatorial Guinea by aggressive and drunken border police, and facing possible death when taken hostage by drugged Liberian teenage rebels may not be a conventional idea of truly ‘living’, but, in September 2003, Riaan Manser rode out of Cape Town, determined to become the first person to circumnavigate Africa by bicycle. He thought it would take him a year – it took him over two. At the end of 2005, he cycled back into Cape Town, 14kg lighter and having covered 36,500 km through thirty-four countries.

Intending to use his journey to generate local and international awareness of the often appalling standard of living in Africa, Riaan was also propelled by a strong desire for African adventure, a desire that was inevitably fulfilled. While Riaan’s journey allowed him to experience some of the greatest generosity and kindness that he had ever encountered, often from the poorest of the poor, his adventures were also often of a more harrowing kind. In Around Africa on my Bike, Riaan allows the reader to relive the toil, excitement and occasional terror of his journey - negotiating the Sahara and Libyan deserts, learning French, Portuguese and Arabic, eating monkey, rat and bat, standing in front of the pyramids, being awarded the freedom of the Red Sea in Egypt, feeding hyenas mouth to mouth, and standing on the highest, as well as at the lowest, points in Africa. Riaan arrived safely in Cape Town on 25 November 2005.

RIAAN MANSER was born in 1973 in Pretoria. He grew up in Zululand and attended John Ross College. After studying HR Management, he worked in the medical industry. He has been a lifesaver, a surfer and a rugby player.

A bicycle adventure of heart and spirit

.At first I thought Riaan was a bit of a self-promoter. But as his story unfolded it was obvious that he needed every bit of promotion, courage, charm, toughness, luck and spirit to accomplish a near impossible bicycle journey, circumnavigating a continent riven by corruption and suspicion of ones neighbors. At times the book seemed like an endless loop of getting to a border, being turned back, and finding a way forward again. It is true he was helped along the way by many fellow expatriate South Africans, but it was also many ordinary Africans who lifted their hand in kindness to Riaan as well.

Good for you, Riaan, and an adventure of the body and spirit well worth reading!

Living the example - an exceptional voyage by an exceptional man

A well written travel book of a very special kind. Riaan Manser did what nobody would ever have dared to consider: taking the longest possible road around Africa, he bicycled through the most dangerous countries in the most dangerous times of unrest and social trouble. The resulting two year adventure was an exceptional physical achievement and a sort of initiation into humanity. In his simple and honest way of narrating the events, as well as his own physical and psychological struggles, Riaan gets some of what he learned across to the reader. Having traveled extensively myself, I really enjoyed every page and learned a lot from this book, in particular a deep respect of African people and their cultures.

Riaan is an amazing person

it was an exciting and a most interesting read. It tended to be a bit diary-ised at times which is understandable but somewhat too detailed for me. Clearly Riaan Manser is a very courageous man, fortunately he was well supported to achieve his dreams.

Pretty much the base of everything you need to know

This book covers almost all aspects of thermal hydrolics in a nuclear reactor. It even has multiple correlations for flow through a core, and in general is totally dedicated to nuclear systems, unlike most heat transfer or fluid flow books. If you buy this book you would be smart to keep it over selling it back to the bookstore.

Very insightful for cafeteria managers!

I find this book very helpful since I run a cafeteria for public employees which is somewhat different than running a private restaurant. Workers in my building make very high salaries and deman high quality, lots of options and menu variety Mr. Ible explains how to keep the menu varies without making it overwhelming for your cook staff.
His advice on Customer Serve also very helpful. Customers have many options when it comes to getting food, so it is vital to treat each one as best you can.
But I think that best insight of the book is that it teaches you how to approach your job in a systematic manner, following tried and true patterns that increase both quality and efficiency of food and cash flow.
I recommend this book highly.

This book is very rewarding for cafeteria operators. Real life examples are easy to follow and are very practical. Detailed calculations of expenses help with cash flow and budgeting. Food safety is properly explained.
