The Best Book on Authentic Practical Kabbalah on the Market - in fact all books from this author are.

I would like to thank Mr. Jacobus Gerhardus Swart for his books that enabled me to get me where I wanted to be and that put me on the path I was destined to walk. I highly recommend to follow the exercises in his Book of Self-Creation and use the amulets in the Book of Seals and Amulets. The material in his three books represent huge amount of gathered information from authentic practical kabbalah. The wisdom of this aouthor and the way he presents the content is the best on the market. I own over 50 books on Jewish Mysticism and nothing come close. His three books deserve much bigger visibility and publicity - if followed, the books have the power to transform anyone who follows the and thus they have the power to transform the world. Personally I have perused the amulet for success and quickly became financially free. I also follow the meditation exercises in his Book of Self-Creation. I highly recomment anyone interested in practical kabbalah to get all three books. You won't be sorry.

A very very entertaining read.. JLH really matures as an author !!

A very entertaining read. A very different book with respect to the earlier Johannes Cabal books since it is actually from the perspective of two characters. Johannes and his brother Horst. They could not be more different in their outlook towards the world. While Horst is a thorough gentleman with moral qualms and even worries about propriety !! The most polite vampire possible. While Johannes is well... Johannes... cold,rational, able to transmute anything as a means to the ultimate end he wants to achieve. It is a very nice chemistry between Horst and Johannes and the tale does entwine both of them together in a very very impressive way. Horst is a hero, willing to lay down his life for good people.. Johannes knows himself extremely well and shows unexpected and extremely profound levels of empathy (heaven forfend !!) in the book.
This book has less humor in it than the previous ones, but then again most of the humor is generated by the point of view of Johannes looking at the world and Horst, well.. he is just not like Johannes. Of course that does not mean it is less enjoyable, but I would have preferred a little more of Howard's special and fantastic humor in the narrative. The plot is also simpler than the Fear Institute but with very sharp twists and turns and Howard's seamless and brilliant writing style that makes both the unpredictable and the predictable facets a joy to read.
I thought that the part with Horst could have been faster paced but that is just me liking Johannes over Horst anyway.
If I had a brother I would love for him to be like Horst (since I am a lot like Johannes). I would recommend everyone to read it. Especially those who are already fans of the series...

Preternaturally Enjoyable

Quirky characters and most irregular situations abound in this smartly written narrative of the necromancer and his vampiric sibling, who, as a point of fact, refuses to remain dead... or, rather, undead. Somewhere in between, but not quite fantasty, sci-fi or horror, the fourth installment of the Johannes Cabal series was both a masterful utilization of language and dry humor, lightheartedly poking fun at vampire lore - and pretty much every topic it touches upon.

Set in an extremely well fleshed out dreamworld, the landscape for the story becomes a character in its own rights, and without the verbosity of description that often sinks books with such attention to stylistic writing. Cabal (a fear hunter) is an anti-hero of sorts who almost reminds me of some bizarre amalgamation of Anne Rice's vampires and Dorian Grey... but with an even sharper tongue. Along with Horst, his said undead relation, the story unfolds brilliantly and with copious amounts of authorial imagination.

With just the right tone of darkness and wit, it moves quickly and remains engaging despite the not overly complicated plot. These characters sparkle, the story exudes cleverness, and it possibly has become my favorite work of fiction so far this year. I have been passing up on this series for some unbeknownst reason, but find it is one of very, very few books I will both reread and do some catching up on with the previous novels.

The family that battles montrous abominations together...

The snarky, tongue-in-cheek tone that made the original Johannes Cabal book such a delight to read returns in force with "The Brothers Cabal."

This time the focus is on the exploits of Johannes' debonair vampire brother Horst, who is more concerned with keeping his fashionable trousers free of grass stains than proper undead pursuits. Resurrected by a shadowy organization bent on domination, the polite pacifist Horst is not exactly the "Lord of the Dead" they were hoping for. When the otherwise amiable kidnapping goes awry, the pragmatically-violent Johannes steps in to save the day.

While the original novel in the series is still my favorite, "The Brothers Cabal" holds a charming second-place. Much of the pithy supernatural problem-solving that is the best part of any Johannes Cabal story is replaced with too many action scenes for my taste. However, the amusingly derisive banter between the brothers will be familiar to anyone with experience in sibling rivalry and the cast of characters is the best J L Howard has created yet.

The Ultimate Book of Decorative Knots

I have been waiting for this book for over a year. This was not a disappointment! This has very good illustrations and pictures. The book itself is is beautiful and can be a coffee table peice. As with any book about a skill, I'm sure it will be below some experts, but you will get results. The best part, is for projects for wrapping objects, there are real pictures of the project being made. For some this might not be necessary, but for visual learners, this is great. Happy knotting.

A Knotter's delight

First, I am relatively new to the decorative knotting world. That being said, I have accumulated a good sized collection of books already, probably 12-15 in number. So far, I would consider this book a must-have for the decorative knotter.

The author covers a remarkable spectrum of knots with excellent pictures and pretty good directions. The book is over 500 pages, so you definitely get your money's worth. There are sections on braids, plaits and sennits, turk's heads, oriental knots, flat decorative knots, combinations of wall and crown knots and more. There are pictures of various projects by expert knotters--some of them amazing--which may inspire you to start on your next project.

Although it would be hard for me to get by without Tom Hall's book and the books from Don Burrhus (knottool.com), if I had to have only one knot book, I would pick this one due to the breadth of topics covered.

A joy to read

This book deserves to be much more widely used. Ziman's prose is simply wonderful, where Kittel is unreadable, and Ashcroft & Mermin often dense. It's a bit quirky (how on earth did he find the epigrams for each chapter?) but that is what makes it lovable. Anyone who doubts his scientific soundness should check out his massive "Electrons & Phonons."
The main advantage of this book is that it emphasizes conceptual understanding over mathematical manipulation. That's also its weakness: Ziman often glosses over or just sketches what in other texts would be occasions for massive algebra. Perhaps if you are a true theorist type, you can fill in the blanks on your own. As an experimentalist, I feel like I need some other intro texts to make me feel like I can do *some* math in the field. On the other hand, I don't know of any textbook that makes me feel I could do the truly heavy lifting.

No doubt as good as the first edition

I used heavily the first edition of this book, and have not seen the second, but it is no doubt as good as the first, which was packed full of insights into the many rich phenomena that exists in solids. It has served, and will serve, future generations of students in the 21st century in their development of new ideas and technologies based on condensed matter physics.
Writers of physics texts should follow the strategy that this author does, in his statement that "a treatise expounds; a textbook explains". The emphasis of any book in physics should be in developing the reader's intuition; the mathematics sometimes takes hold and moves the reader away from the essential ideas. The author is one of the few who has not done this, and that is no doubt the reason for this book's popularity.

Wow a pleasure to read

There are few physics books that I can say I enjoy reading for fun (and I'm a student of physics) but I must admit that this book is excellent. It holds true not only to its reputation but to what the author's original intent was. It is thorough, enlightening, to the point and fun to read, the author's sense of humor not only aids in ease or reading but makes retention and elucidation all the more easy! This is an excellent graduate text on basic solid sate physics, even though it was published in 1975.

It covers all the bascis areas, from periodicty to lattice waves, phonons, semiconductors etc at an accessible level to the beginning graduate student. A must read.

Each of the chapters explores the three same broad questions: What, institutionally, is the global governance of migration in that area? Why, politically, does that type of governance exist? How, normatively, can we ground claims about the type of global governance that should exist in that area? About the Author

Alexander Betts is Director of the MacArthur Foundation-funded Global Migration Governance project, a Fellow of Wadham College, and Hedley Bull Research Fellow in International Relations, University of Oxford. His research focuses on the international politics of migration and refugee protection, with a geographical focus on Sub-Saharan Africa.
