If you need a manual with a diving planner, don't buy this product

This product does not come with the DVD, which was expected, but it was also missing the diving planner. The diving planner is also needed for the exam portion and is typically included in the manual (helps you calculate how long you can be underwater). A classmate had an extra one that I could use to study and take the exam with, but do not assume you will be so lucky if you are planning to take the exam with just this manual.

If you do not need the DVD or the planner, then this product is perfect. The book was in great condition & had knowledge tests at the end of each chapter to prepare you for the open water exam.

When I wrote this book, I sought to write an action packed political thriller that would be a fitting sequel to "An Involuntary Spy."  The research that I uncovered showing that the the Agri-Chemical industry of the United States was moving in on precious farmland in the Ukraine and the insertion of a U.S. State Dept. official in a top ministry seat of the Ukraine Government gave me the perfect setting for the story, which turned out to be a novella in length.  This book is fiction, but I hope that it makes you question what is behind the rhetoric of "freedom" that leads to most modern wars.  They are never about freedom.

Fast-paced spy novel

Kenneth Eade's "To Russia for Love," book 2 in An Involuntary Spy series, is a suspense/thriller about a spy who finds himself in Russia amid a giant web of conflict. The protagonist, Seth Rogan, has discovered that his girlfriend has disappeared while Ukraine is embroiled in a civil war. Eade does a fantastic job weaving together thought-provoking scenarios with action and intrigue. As a fan of the first book, I feel this book built perfectly off the story and characters that I had enjoyed. I particularly liked getting to know Seth more and what motivates him as the plot really kicked into gear. A recommended read if you like spy novels!

Excellent Spy Thriller

Kenneth Eade has written an excellent spy thriller. Excellent spy thriller

I don't usually read spy thrillers even though they are one of my favorite types of movie. A friend of mine recommended this so I thought I would give it a chance and I am so glad that I did. This book has completely opened me up to the spy genre and I will definitely be reading more of Kenneth Eade's books. To Russia for Love has an excellent plot from start to finish and I actually finished it in 1 sitting as I could not put it down. Seth is an excellent character and I can see that there is another book about him that appears to be set before this one that I am going to have to read next.

Overall this is an excellent spy thriller that uses aspects of current events to weave a complicated and fascinating story. Highly recommended for fans of the genre and anyone else really as this might well open you up to this genre like it has for me.q

About the Author
Dr. Hall is a professor and the founder of the Executive Master's in Not-for-Profit Leadership Program at Seattle University in Washington. She is also president of Stewart/Hall, a consulting firm serving U.S. and international private, corporate, and government grantmakers. From 1977 to 1995 she was president and trustee of the Weyerhaeuser Company Foundatoin and vice president of corporate affairs for Weyerhaeuser Company. While there, Dr. Hall wrote the second and third editions of GETTING FUNDED.

Ms. Howlett has been helping nonprofits raise money joyfully since 1975 as a board member, development director, executive director, and freelancer. For the last 15 years, she has been a fund-raising consultant to hundreds of nonprofits throughout the United States (especially noninstitutional organizations, small nonprofits, and rural communities). From 1991 to 2001, Ms. Howlett led the Seattle-based Puget Sound Grantwriters Associatoin, bringing thousands of grantseekers and grantmakers together through presentations, conferences, workshops, and joint projects.

excellent as a textbook or for the professional writing grants

I am using this book as a textbook in my business bachelor's degree program. The professor who is a professional grant writer for a Florida college picked this book as she said it covered all the basics with easy to understand steps. Grant writing is one of those activities for which there are many "how to" books. The real dilemma for novices-or even those of us with a few grants under our belt-is which book to adopt as our handy desk reference, its well-thumbed pages peppered with hi-liter and sticky notes. Getting Funded:The Complete Guide to Writing Grant Proposals by Mary Hall and Susan Howlett fits this role perfectly.
The latest update of a classic on the subject, this 2003 edition provides an excellent overview of all aspects of grantwriting, beginning with the most important steps of assessing the grant-applying organization's readiness and capacity for taking on the project and securing the necessary funding. Each of the 13 chapters are well-written and organized by sub-headings that assist the grantwriter to quickly locate and digest guidance at the applicable step in the long process of developing and writing a fundable grant application. Most of the chapters include a checklist that serves as a summary of the chapter as well as a handy reference tool for assuring all issues have been addressed
What I especially appreciated about this book was its continual reminder that the process of developing a project and writing a grant proposal is in itself a valuable learning experience. If it weren't so difficult to write a winning proposal, if funders didn't require such a high showing of competence and commitment, money would surely be easier to come by, but there is no guarantee that we would be spending it wisely. The process of grant development and writing, from budgets to case statements for our organizations, drives us in the non-profit world to ensure that our projects are the best and highest use of grantor funds to serve the needs of our communities. I highly recommend Getting Funded as the best resource available to help achieve this goal.

Knight’s success as a college basketball coach is unquestioned. He was college basketball’s Coach of the Year five times and won three NCAA championships. He’s currently a basketball analyst for ESPN. Knight’s success was built on preparation. Recognizing that offensive success could be fleeting, he always emphasized defense, which he describes as making the appropriate response to the negativity one can encounter on offense. Embrace Negative Thinking

I have never been a basketball fan, so I went into reading The Power of Negative Thinking wondering if I would "get it." I knew who Bob Knight was (even as a non-basketball fan, how could you not?), but had no idea what to expect. I'm happy to report one need not be a basketball fan to thoroughly enjoy this lively, accessible, conversational-style look at the power of overcoming positivity with negative thinking.

There has been a backlash over the cult of positive thinking over the last few years, and with good reasons. Barbara Ehrenreich's Bright-Sided: How Positive Thinking Is Undermining America is one of the first books I read on the subject. And over the years, a great deal of research has come out warning about the dangers of unfettered optimism. But usually, optimists dismiss discussion of negative thinking as being depressing, pessimistic, or just giving up.

Knight starts his book with a very simple premise that overcomes this objection. Negative thinking is not about giving up or being a pessimist. Instead, it is about NEGATING everything that can get in the way of victory. Winning isn't about who wants it more. Winning is about who is most prepared. And being prepared is about honestly assessing strength, weaknesses, and developing a plan that negates mistakes and anything else that can get in the way. Or, as he sums it up:

"Having the will to win is not enough. Everyone has that. What matters is having the will to prepare to win."

Another point Knight makes is to not push people to do what they can't do, but push them to do what they can. It seems so logical, and yet we ignore this every day:

"My list of hollow platitudes includes the idea that You Can Do Anything You Really Want to Do. The truth is you can't. Chalk it up to the Divine Being's grand plan for making the whole world work because of interdependence, but the fact is each of us has more things that we cannot do well than we can. That's why society has doctors and plumbers and electricians and mechanics and every other Craiglist specialist."

The point is that whether you are pushing yourself, or running a team, you need to have a clear understanding not only of your strengths, but also an honest assessment of your weaknesses. The inability to do something is not a character flaw (as is not-so-subtly implied when you are told "If you really want to do it, you can"). The Negative Thinker recognizes the strengths and weaknesses in his team and, instead of pushing people to do what they can't do, pushes them to do what they can to best take advantage of their talents.

There is a lot of great information in this book of particular value to anyone in a leadership position, whether that is a sports coach or a business owner. In particular, when he discusses setting maximum, but realistic, expectations for those who answer to you. People will, in general, work to whatever level you will tolerate. Don't tolerate less than maximum results. But at the same time, make sure those expectations are based on the real abilities of the person and not an arbitrary, unreachable goal. He offers great examples from his own coaching experiences on how to work toward this.

I have two minor gripes with the book. First, at times Knight gets a little too conversational. He'll be on a discussion point, and then switch over to an odd little anecdote that bears little resemblance to the point he was making. Second, there are a lot of unnecessary filler quotes thrown at the end of each chapter which are just random adages and clichés. In fact, half of Chapter 11 is nothing but clichés and adages. It felt like they were trying to fluff up the word count. (My copy appears to be double spaced, but this may be because it is an advanced review copy and the final version may have more normal spacing between the sentences).

Overall, The Power of Negative Thinking is a fantastic look into the thought processes and work ethic of a man who knows that it takes more that Happy Fluffy Thoughts to win.

Necessary reading for today's pro coaches

Positive thinking is really important in sports. Athletes do best when they are confident in their skills. That being said, confrontation is important. Working to improve weaknesses is important. Realizing how to maximize strengths and minimize/strengthen weak areas is a key to success.

When Professional athletes that have been deluged with positive thinking reinforcement then become coaches, the fear of disrupting confidence and chemistry in the room is so imbedded that it can restrict the need to address and minimize athletes limitiations. Bobby Knight's book addresses this.
