A Great Book For Discovering Your Power Animal

Shamans and indigenous cultures have long been familiar with the concept of animal guides. Animal guides are represented by animal forms, and provide information, guidance, and protection. Some people use the words animal totems and power animals interchangeably, but according to Dr. Steven Farmer in his new book Power Animals - How To Connect With Your Animal Spirit Guides, there is a subtle difference.

Totem animals are usually asssociated with groups, such as a tribal totem, clan totem, or family totem. Even contemporary cultures have totem animals, such as those for sports teams (e.g. Toronto Blue Jays), or clubs and societies (such as the Lions Club).

Power animals, however, are personal and specific. Like totem animals, they are guardian spirits who empower us. Yet, power animals have a unique and highly personal relationship with the individual, leading the way through non-ordinary reality. Power animals can be contacted through meditation, dreams, visions, and shamanic journeys. They can also appear in physical form, bearing an omen or message--depending on the context of the sighting, how often it appears, and how it is behaving.

Power Animals describes the three realms of non-ordinary reality--and the plane where power animals reside--the four channels of spiritual perception, and how to honor your power animal. Farmer gives a summary of 36 different power animals, including a channeled message from each, qualities of the animal, what it means when a particular animal is your personal power animal, when to ask for this animal's help, and how to access it's power. He acknowledges that his summaries aren't exhaustive, and there are other power animals that exist--including imaginary ones like dragons and unicorns.

Included with this book is a CD featuring guided meditations, with a run-time of 65:53. The first three featuring drumming with a particular rhythm, the fourth has a similar rhythm using a rattle, and the fifth offers a unique type of rhythm and sound using the didgeridoo and click sticks. The drumming and rattling are at the rate of 4 to 7 beats per second, which is the same rhythm that shamans use to induce a trance state in order to do their work.

Personally, there are several birds and animals that I've identified with over the years--animals that gave me great wisdom. However, I never really felt that I connected with them as a power animal. (Of course, I didn't really try to establish a relationship, either.) I approached the process with an open mind, and listened to Track 1 which is a guided meditation to help you find and retrieve your power animal.

Farmer's soothing voice led me down into the earth and out into a place where I was to watch for animals that crossed my path. One could imagine a forest, mountain, desert, beach, ocean, and so on, and I was surprised that my visualization actually shifted between all of these terrains. Quite a few animals, including sea creatures and birds, crossed my path--but Farmer says to be on the lookout for the animal that appears 4 times.

I was quite surprised that a creature did, in fact, come to me 4 times. Most surprisingly, however, was that it was a creature I did not expect. As I "retrieved" this beautiful creature with Farmer's guidance, I felt a sacred joy and reverence fill my being--and tears welled up in my eyes.

After coming out of the meditation and reading about my power animal, I had to chuckle. It made such sense to me! In fact, in a personality system I have studied, my particular personality is often associated with this particular creature. Even the keyword for my power animal is reflected strongly in my astrological chart!

If you're looking for a simple but profound way for discovering your own personal power animals, I highly recommend this book and CD from Dr. Steven Farmer.

Questioning the Validity of this work!

Is it wrong to express disappointment in a book when it fails to live up to your expectations? I purchased this book because I have long been fascinated in the spiritual practice of animal spirits guiding and supporting us.

I didn't feel a strong spiritual connection or conviction concerning the topic from the author. He seemed to briefly tiptoe around the animals that he choose to write about. Even with that, there was little insight or voice to the information presented in the book. I felt like the content was read somewhere and regurgitated on the page with little else added.

I was surprised at the similarity between this book and Ted Andrews' "Animal Speak" book. I was really looking forward reading a new perspective on the power animals. There was absolutely nothing written in the "Power Animals" book that was not available in another book on the power animals.

The content on the pages is limited and lacking in depth. It basically is a cliff notes version for the Ted Andrews book. Save your money and purchase from another author.

A Great Resource Book

Dr. Farmer has brought to us a simple yet very powerful resource guide to explore the phenomenon of animal guides. I have found this book so very helpful to help explain when certain animals have appeared in my dreams, my meditations and so on. The journey Dr. Farmer takes you on with his enclosed CD are great mystical travels through your innerself to bring forth that power animal that is by your side. I was astounded by which animal appeared when I did the CD meditation and when I read the description Dr. Farmer had provided in regards to that particular animal, it fit for me perfectly.

I enjoy in Dr. Farmer's book the information for each animal on how to work with their individual energy, how to bring this energy into your life. This is a great resource book that I highly recommend to anyone whose interests have been to discover the power in animals, who have acted from time to time as our spirit guides in our lives. Bless you Dr. Farmer for compiling this magnificent book of knowledge.

Nazi doctors did more than conduct bizarre experiments on concentration-camp inmates; they supervised the entire process of medical mass murder, from selecting those who were to be exterminated to disposing of corpses. Lifton (The Broken Connection; The Life of the Self shows that this medically supervised killing was done in the name of "healing," as part of a racist program to cleanse the Aryan body politic. After the German eugenics campaign of the 1920s for forced sterilization of the "unfit,"it was but one step to "euthanasia," which in the Nazi context meant systematic murder of Jews. Building on interviews with former Nazi physicians and their prisoners, Lifton presents a disturbing portrait of careerists who killed to overcome feelings of powerlessness. He includes a chapter on Josef Mengele and one on Eduard Wirths, the "kind," "decent" doctor (as some inmates described him) who set up the Auschwitz death machinery. Lifton also psychoanalyzes the German people, scarred by the devastation of World War I and mystically seeking regeneration. This profound study ranks with the most insightful books on the Holocaust.

This extraordinary work analyzes the terrible, seemingly contradictory phenomenon of doctors becoming agents of mass murder. With chilling power, it limns the Nazi transmutation of values that allowed medical killing to be seen as a therapeutic healing of the body politic. Based on arresting historical scholarship and personal interviews with Nazi and prisoner doctors, the book traces the inexorable logic leading from early Nazi sterilization and euthanasia of its own citizens to mass extermination of European Jews and other "racial undesirables." Ultimately the book asks how doctors rationalized being "killer-healers." Lifton's responsea multifaceted evaluation of genocide, of the seductive power of Nazi ideology, and of the psychological process of "doubling"is both profound and thought-provoking. INSIGHTFUL

The first third of the book is the most interesting and gives a detailed account of how the Nazi Party took control of the medical profession as it existed at the time in Germany. What amazed me is that the administrative and bureaucratic PROCESSES used by the Nazi's in the 1930's are highly similar to how the U.S. Government influences the medical professions in America today. (No, I'm not saying that our government is evil like the Nazi's, just that it's interesting to see how governments, any governments, exercise power over the professions within their domains.) The last two thirds of the book are interesting accounts of individuals who actually implemented the Nazi-inspired perversions of practice.

Technical Expertise

Lifton's writings are concise, exhaustive and very technical. I would not recommend this book to the "new" reader or researcher in Holocaust history. Lifton's material is not of the type of reading that is a "fast read" due to the technicality and psychological interpretations. However, as Lifton is Jewish, there were several points as portrayed mainly in the footnotes where the author is giving his own particular interpretations of psychological theories as to the mental state of the physicians. I found these footnotes to be more subjective in nature than objective. That aside, I highly recommend this book to any person that is a student of not only Auschwitz and the literal horrors of this particular death camp, but to the person that is fascinated by the psychological makeup of these Nazi personnel, i.e., what caused them to employ these acts against their fellow human beings. Very horrific, unbelievable in nature. I had to read several paragraphs over and over in order to fully grasp what was being said, and then I was only able to shake my head in disbelief. Lifton does a masterful job in his research and conveying what he learned on paper. Exhaustively written, scientific in nature, psychological yet has a "fiction" feel. Lifton's work is masterful!

Must read for those concerned with bioethics!

When I read The Origins of Nazi Genocide, which came out in 1995, the author referred to this original book concerning the physicians and scientists who had exploited the 'situation' in Germany to their own ends. I had also come across references to this book in many, many professional papers...yet, made the stupid decision that I didn't need to read it. I finally decided I had to read this when my advisor in science education recommended it because he was using it in teaching bioethics to science teachers.
Though Friedlander's book is excellent, and was my introduction to The Medical Holocaust (especially as concerned the disabled) Lifton's book goes much further and deals with the physician/scientists within the concentration camps as well as in the psychiatric institutions which became involved in the killing machinery of the Nazis. Lifton's book explores the rationalizations made by these men to take advantage of a situation to experiment on those who could not give informed consent. Though Lifton tends to make a few speculations concerning motives from his interviews with physicians who were not prosecuted or were absolved of their involvement in these camps...his speculations are on target (mostly) and he backs up his statements with the words of these doctors from letters and interviews with those people who had the most to do with them: the prisoner physicians forced to work in these environments not only to save their own lives, but the lives of so many others.
Of course, more information is in this book concerning the atrocities. Sometimes, I had to put the book down and leave it for a while because the information is so horrendous. It is so beyond belief that so many physicians could rationalize the experimentation, using a statement I've grown to recognize in legal documents and even in newspapers in the U.S. ('for the good of society'). I just cringe now when I see this or sentences like this. Science should never replace the rights of the individuals. And scientists are never objective...they have the same prejudices and biases that society has and it permeates their work...to the point of biasing the information they find.
My only complaint about Lifton's book is occasional repetition or dwelling on certain topics/agendas. Sometimes, it seemed as if I had just reread the same pages, but Lifton was trying to make a point in most of these cases, or make a case for what he was saying...
The need to teach ethics in all fields of endeavors, including medicine and research science is all the more important today. If we don't, the work of Lifton and FRiedlander to remind the world of the horrors of The MEdical Holocaust will have been in vain. The slippery slope is growing with advanced technology, genomics, cloning, and stem cell use, without the accompanying legal protections. The Nuremberg Code, etched into the history of mankind in 1947, seems to have been forgotten.
To remind your students of the need for morals and ethics within all fields, this book is a necessary addition for required reading. I will certainly make it required for those I work with....

All organizations—from startups to Fortune 500 companies—can find something of value in this book

Every firm needs to get their arms around their pricing. Simply put, pricing adjustments can impact your bottom line much more significantly than any other single organizational function. If you compare the improvement in profitability (for a typical firm) for a 1% increase in price, a 1% increase in volume, a 1% reduction in variable cost, and a 1% reduction in fixed costs, the pricing adjustment will give you the most bang for your buck. Managing pricing is one of the most important things you can manage.

Managing pricing involves taking appropriate pricing actions, and these actions should flow from your pricing strategy. But pricing strategy does not materialize out of nowhere. Rather, it needs to flow from your firm’s business strategy. Achieving alignment between your firm’s business strategy and its pricing strategy ensures that sales, marketing, finance, and everybody else is consistently working towards the same goal in the same manner.

Additionally, alignment allows you to start tackling other pricing topics. How will you set list price for your products/services? Who will your firm give discounts to and why? What are the best responses to a competitive price threat? What tools and processes will you need to effectively manage your firm’s pricing goals? How should you consider the tradeoffs of one pricing approach vs. another? How do you go about building a pricing team?

Implementing lasting pricing changes is not an easy task, but Tim Smith provides a robust framework for reaching executable decisions on all these pressing pricing problems and more. If you want your firm to be a pricing leader, I highly recommend this book.

How the Value-Based Pricing Framework can help almost any organization to establish and strengthen its competitive advantage

Leaders in many organizations are now frustrated by their struggles with price setting, reporting, and variance challenge and are in urgent need of “a predictable and reliable price management system.” Tim Smith has written this book for them. In it, he provides an abundance of information insights, and counsel that will enable to establish and then strengthen such a system.

In my opinion, Smith has done for pricing what Ben Graham and then Warren Buffett have done for investing. There are several parallels between the mindsets they formulated. My guess (only a guess) is that Graham and Buffett value very highly the companies whose leaders embrace that framework and pursue strategies that will have high-impact in a global marketplace that seems to become more volatile, more uncertain, more complex, and more ambiguous each day.

Cluess takes familiar tropes and turns them into something new and exciting in this Lovecraft-meets-Austen adventure. It's great to see a book play with tropes instead of just mindlessly repeating them. As a bonus, this is an exciting, fast-paced story full of really strong characters. I particularly enjoyed the monsters, which are proper, horrifying, supernatural creatures. If you're looking for a book that takes the court-intrigue, chosen-one, and fantasy-romance genres of YA and tears them apart with eldritch tentacles, look no further.

If you aren't looking for that kind of book...maybe think about your life choices?

A Shadow Bright and Burning by Jessica Cluess is the first book in her Kingdom on Fire series and I have to admit, I loved every minute of this story. As soon as I picked it up, I didn’t want to put it down until I finished.

Henrietta Howel has been keeping a secret from everyone but her best friend – she can control flames. As a teacher at the Brimthorn School for Girls, she struggles to hide the part of her that would expose her for a witch and get her executed but when a sorcerer visits the school after hearing that there have been unexpected and sometimes uncontrollable fires, something happens that forces her to reveal herself. When she finds out she is the one the order has been looking for because of a prophecy, and that she isn’t really a witch but a sorcerer, things quickly change for Henrietta.

I really liked Henrietta as a main character. She is smart and she sometimes did things that put her in danger but she tended to do them for all the right reasons. When Henrietta actually learns why she is so valuable to the sorcerers she actually jumps right into learning more about herself and those around her. What she finds out is something she wasn’t really anticipating and it was great to see her navigate her way through the challenges she faced. I thought as a character, Henrietta had quite a bit of growth throughout this book and I look forward to seeing what’s in store for her next.

I thought the world building in this book was really well done. Yes, London is the setting but the London this group of characters live in is at war with a group of Ancients that routinely attack the people in the in the city and it is filled with magicians who are hiding, sorcerers who have pledged themselves to serve the Queen, and even a hobgoblin as a doctor. Add to this the history of the Ancients and what they are doing and it all came together really well.

Outside of Henrietta, there are a number of characters in this book that help to move the story forward. First, the sorcerer who finds her at the school is Master Agrippa. As an orphan, Henrietta eventually came to view him as somewhat of a father figure and I can’t blame her. Once she knew he wasn’t going to kill her because of her ability, she began to trust him and he was always there to help her. Agrippa took her into his home and began to train her to control her power. He gave her a life she never expected and the fact that he allowed Rook, her best friend to stay with her, only encouraged her to think of him that way.

Rook is Henrietta’s best friend although I hesitate to describe him as that. Yes, he is her friend but it is clear they both care for each other as more than that and they are both willing to do whatever they can to keep each other safe. Rook grew up an orphan with Henrietta at the school but because of what he is (an Unclean), he had a very different role at the school. An Unclean is someone who has been attacked by an Ancient. Rook was attacked and survived but has scars that cause him great pain. The scars are also a direct link to the Ancient who attacked him and this is important because as the attacks from the Ancients continue, Rook plays a critical role in the story.

There are also a number of boys within the Order and they are all solid characters. There are two that stand out more than the others – Blackwood and Magnus. I’m not going to say much about these two but I am excited to see where Cluess takes Henrietta’s relationships with these two in the next book. Where Magnus almost immediately embraces Henrietta into the group, Blackwood holds back. They both have their reasons and while things change drastically for all of these characters by the end of the book, I loved seeing not only the building of the friendships and the trust throughout the book but also the growth both Magnus and Blackwood had because of everything that happens.

There are some other characters that have critical roles in the story. Hargrove is the magician that Henrietta meets and ultimately becomes interested in learning more from…for many reasons that I can’t share. She actually meets him her first day in London and when he reveals some secrets, Henrietta is pulled into something she never expected to be. Plus...he pretty much says whatever he wants to and I loved everything about that. There is also another member of the order that is just looking for a reason to discredit Henrietta but you will have to read the book to find out more about that.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. If you like magic, danger, intrigue, great characters, and a fantastic story, you should definitely consider checking this book out. As a first book in the series, the pacing was well done and the story had me turning the pages to see what would happen next. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book to see where the story goes next. Go get this one my friends, I don’t think you will be disappointed.

Overall enjoyable read, but not spectacular

Overall an enjoyable read. I am not the biggest fan of Henrietta, but the author makes up for it with interesting supporting characters. Some of the characters felt flat to me and some of the twists didn't seem to fit with their personalities. Still, I'm impressed for a debut novel (as I think this is) and do look forward to reading future works.
