A little romance, a little mystery and a lot of character
By Anita Strawn de Ojeda
The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest is the first of Melanie’s medieval books for older readers. Odette Menkels, the heroine is 21 (not that this older heroine bothered my girls at all—the youngest of them finished the book first). Because of her background, she discovers within herself a desire to help the poorest and most vulnerable of her fellow townspeople—the orphaned and very poor children. While she is certain that God looks in favor at her scheme to steal from the rich by poaching game from the local noble’s estate, as she becomes friends with the young man entrusted by the noble to catch the poacher, she starts to question her convictions.
Odette finds herself torn between her growing attraction for the man tasked with catching her and the respectability of marrying another suitor who’s wealth would allow her to help the poor in a more traditional way.
The author does a superb job of exploring the character’s motives and feelings so that the reader understands why they react to each new plot twist they way that they do. Readers who have dealt with betrayal at the hands of friends or family members will especially relate to the main characters, Odette and Jorgen, as they explore what it means to forgive.
The details about medieval life sprinkled throughout the story make the setting come alive without detracting from the plot.
If you’re looking for a great story with a little romance, a little mystery and a lot of character, look no further than The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest.

a really nice clean romance with adventure woven in, that will appeal to all ages of readers.

3.5/5
The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest was an easy sell for me. It was something a little different than I normally read because it is a period read, the cover is gorgeous, and I was told it was a blend between Swan Lake and Robin Hood. Umm, heck yes! Please sign me up. I really enjoyed The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest for all of those reasons and more. I thought the writing was absolutely beautiful. It felt lyrical. I don't say that about books often because most of the time because that isn't something that normally jumps out at me. Writing can be good, great, bad or even powerful, but Melanie Dickerson's writing spoke to me in a different way than most books do. It felt like it had movement and life within it's words. It really was beautiful.
The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest is a unique mixture of young adult and adult. I think it will appeal to readers of all ages. It took me a little bit of time to adjust to the story telling and pace of the story, but once I did I flowed right along. Odette lives a pretty privileged life compared to most people in her village, but she is such a caring person that she is always looking out for others. Even if it means breaking the rules to help them. You see, Odette is a poacher in the forest. (This is where Robin Hood comes in.) She sneaks into the forest in the dead of night to poach a couple of animals and gives them to her poor neighbors. The other aspect to the story is a really wonderful romance. And who does the romance involve? The new forester, of course. And he is intent on capturing the town poacher.
The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest would make a great movie. I could so easily see it playing out on a big screen as I was reading it. Melanie Dickerson is a very vivid writer. It was one of my favorite things about the book. There is a religious element in the book, but I thought it fit great in with the time period and was handled very well. The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest has lots of layers in it. I really liked the way all of the different storylines played off each other and wove together. This is a really nice clean romance with adventure woven in, that will appeal to all ages of readers.

Melanie Delivers Greatness Again, Two Thumbs Up!!
By Kara Grant
What a great book! I loved Odette's adventures in hunting and how Jorgen is determined to win her heart by helping others :) My favorite characters by far were Jorgen's mom and Lord Thornbeck/the margrave. Jorgen's mom was just lovely and so wonderfully feisty, Lord Thornbeck was quite a menacing presence surrounded by terrible rumors, but he definitely surprises me later in the story and I loved him for it :) I suspected one of the villains early in the story, but there were many twists that I didn't see coming and kept my interest!
Dickerson continues to win me over with her fabulous stories and this one is no different; a delightful read that blessed me the whole way through with adventure, faith, helping the less fortunate, doing the right thing, loyalty, trusting God and romance. Two thumbs up all the way!!
