I Sailed with Magellan, by Stuart Dybek

Following his renowned The Coast of Chicago and Childhood, story writer Stuart Dybek returns with eleven masterful and masterfully linked stories about Chicago's fabled and harrowing South Side. United, they comprise the story of Perry Katzek and his widening, endearing clan. Through these streets walk butchers, hitmen, mothers and factory workers, boys turned men and men turned to urban myth. I Sailed With Magellan solidifies Dybek's standing as one of our finest chroniclers of urban America.

From Publishers Weekly
Dybek's third work of fiction (his first in over 10 years, after the story collections Childhood and Other Neighborhoods and The Coast of Chicago) comprises 11 elegiac, interlocking stories narrated by Perry Katzek, a young Polish-American growing up on Chicago's racially diverse South Side in the 1950s and 1960s. Although it lacks the narrative momentum of a linear novel, the book offers a powerful, cumulative portrait of the lives of Perry, his family and the people in his neighborhood, where "it seemed that almost every day someone lost teeth at one or another of the corner bars." "Breasts" follows three men with only tenuous connections to Perry, including Joey Ditto, a gangster who keeps getting distracted from making a ruthless hit by the ethereal forms of past lovers. "Blue Boy," which begins as a tale about a sick youngster, ends as a gorgeous contemplation of loss. The strongest stories deal directly with Perry's exploits. In "Orchids," Perry and his friend Stosh try to scheme their way to Mexico by stealing exotic orchids, and in the much-anthologized "We Didn't," Perry and his girlfriend's erotic lakeshore tumbling ("Swimsuits at our ankles, we kicked like swimmers to free our legs") is interrupted by the discovery of a dead body. "I was the D. H. Lawrence of not doing it," Perry reflects, "the voice of all would-be lovers who ached and squirmed." Indeed, all of these beautifully written stories teem with aching recollections. They are lyrical odes to wasted lives, youthful desires, vanishing innocence and the transformative power of memory, which is "the channel by which the past conducts its powerful energy; it's how the past continues to love."

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Whenever Perry Katzek's much loved Uncle Lefty takes him up on the roof of his building to see the pigeon coop and the great grid of Chicago, he says, "Welcome to Dreamsville," which could serve as an alternative title for this magical suite of linked stories. In his first book since the unforgettable Coast of Chicago (1990), Dybek writes of his hometown with the poignant realism of Henry Roth, the mythic intensity of Leon Forrest, and the poetic otherworldliness of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Eleven perfectly formed and exquisitely sensual tales--each so saturated with personality, event, and revelation they feel like novels--illuminate transforming moments in Perry's life. Imaginative, adventurous, and romantic, Perry falls in love and loses loved ones, witnesses violence and experiences transcendence, while Dybek masterfully and tenderly conjures the edgy ambience of Chicago's ethnic neighborhoods and the great divide between the bucolic North Side and the broken-glass-strewn, tavern-spiked industrial South Side, where bravado, musical gifts, and witty repartee are highly valued. Set in a chimerical world of ice and flowers, soul-bruising hard work and sweet dreams, ruthless mobsters and die-hard friends, Dybek's mesmerizing tales coalesce into an epic of survival and spiritual growth that is, by turns, gritty, surreal, hilarious, tragic, and bittersweet. Its Inventiveness and Spirit are Undeniable
By Bookreporter.com
Stuart Dybek's I SAILED WITH MAGELLAN arrives more than a decade after his previous book, a short story collection titled THE COAST OF CHICAGO. While it's neither a blockbuster nor a doorstop tome like Jeffrey Eugenides's long-awaited MIDDLESEX or Donna Tartt's years-in-the-making THE LITTLE FRIEND, I SAILED WITH MAGELLAN is definitely worth the wait, serving as a reintroduction to a writer who captures his old Chicago neighborhood with documentary detail and raconteur flourish.
Despite its billing as a novel, I SAILED WITH MAGELLAN is actually a series of short stories that have locales and characters in common. All feature a teenage narrator named Perry and all are set in the Little Village community of Chicago during the early 1960s. Dybek lovingly and often humorously evokes this time and place through telling observations.
Poor families use old bed sheets for curtains and veterans order shots for friends who didn't come back from the war. It's a dangerous, often discouraging neighborhood, and in strong, unfussy prose Dybek describes "the daily round of life where bag ladies combed alleys and the homeless, sleeping in junked cars, were found frozen to death in winter. Laid-off workmen became wife beaters in their newfound spare time; welfare mothers in the projects turned tricks to supplement the family budget; and it seemed that every day someone lost teeth at one or another of the corner bars."
Fortunately, Dybek lets his lively characters --- including a junior high writing prodigy named Camille Estrada and a slob hitman named Joe Ditto --- run wild in this setting. Rather than engineering plots and scenes for them, Dybek simply lets them tell their own stories, a rare talent that gives the book a personal, unrehearsed quality. Plus, it makes for some truly weird goings-on. As a coming-of-age story, I SAILED WITH MAGELLAN eschews any predictability in favor of a dreamlike flow of events and characters, many of which are supersaturated with local color.
There is, for instance, the Chickenman, who walks around town with a chicken perching on his head and pecking corn off his tongue. And there's Little Village's unofficial child saint, Ralphie Poskozim, who was born with blue skin: "The blue was plainly visible beneath his blue-green eyes, smudges darker than shadows, as if he'd been in a fistfight or gotten into his mother's mascara. Even his lips looked cold."
All of these strange characters are filtered through Perry's perspective, and as the novel progresses, he grows up and his concerns become more adult. Fortunately, as Perry gains more freedom, the stories don't lose their charm or their sense of wonder.
Memory works in flashes, not in fluid narratives, and it allows for exaggeration of facts. In the end these chapters cohere into something larger than a short-story collection, but the book is not like a proper novel. This is certainly not a criticism: the form of I SAILED WITH MAGELLAN may be unclassifiable, but its inventiveness and spirit are undeniable.

Excellent writing, deeply known characters
By J. Rosenberg
I especially liked the stories in the first half of this book, those that focus on main character Perry, a boy growing up in a Polish neighborhood on Chicago's Southwest side in the 1950s. They are deeply felt, wonderfully detailed, highly realistic and with excellent characters. Toward the middle are a few stories more "poetic" in style that appeal to me less. The last stories return to the old neighborhood and again, the perfectly noted details and highly individualized characters drew me back into the lives of that time and place. Highly recommended for those who enjoy short fiction and anyone who appreciates excellent writing.

Among the best contemporary fiction I have read in years
By R. M. Peterson
I will start with the conclusion: READ THIS BOOK. It is exhilarating and poignant, funny and wise. It consists of eleven interlaced stories about Perry Katzek, the son of an immigrant from Poland, growing up on the South Side of Chicago in the 1950s. The Chicago setting, the kaleidoscopic episodes, the sweaty grittiness of urban, immigrant life, and the rather picaresque nature of the narrative all remind me of Saul Bellow's "The Adventures of Augie March", though, to my mind, I SAILED WITH MAGELLAN turns out to be an even better book.

No doubt much of it is based on the personal experiences of author Stuart Dybek, who was born in 1942 and grew up in the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago. Indeed, much of the book may well be personal memoir draped with but the thinnest of fictional garb. Still, it reads more like a novel (or a collection of inter-related stories) than like a memoir.

Those who are from Chicago and are now between the ages of 55 and 75 might treasure the book just a tad more than the rest of us, inasmuch as it features such places as Twelfth Street Beach, Sportsman's Park, the Rocks, Meigs Field, Douglas Park, the outdoor market on Maxwell Street, the Sanitary Canal, and the Baha'i Temple. (I certainly would treasure any novel half as good about Philadelphia - my hometown - during the same years.) But one need not be from Chicago to find the book special. What it has to say about memory, childhood and youth, and the human condition should speak to most, and especially to males who grew up in an urban, working-class setting.

The book abounds with lovable characters and with sparkling anecdotes. Among the former are Perry's father (whom he and his brother call "Sir" because one night while watching "Leave It to Beaver" he had said how nice it was that Wally and Beaver called their father "Sir"), his uncle Lefty who played the sax and the horses, his best friend Stosh, and his erstwhile girlfriend Laurel Elaine Levanto who left Perry stranded in the Fire Truck Graveyard after the high school prom. Among the anecdotes is this one about Denny "the Fish" Mihala: when the fourth-grade teacher Sister Philomena asked the class, "If birds come in flocks, and fish in schools, what other kinds of groupings can you name?", Denny eagerly answered, "A dozen donuts!"

The motif that struck home with me the most had to do with memory and nostalgia. Here is one such excerpt: "Who knows why certain humble objects - a bike, a sweater, a sled - are salvaged by memory or dream to become emblems of childhood? Childhood, an alternative universe expanding into forgetfulness, where memory rather than matter is the stuff of creation."

I SAILED WITH MAGELLAN is also noteworthy for its writing and craftsmanship. The stories are skillfully interwoven, and there are moments when Dybek's writing is brilliant, such as when he refers to a character gazing up at the nighttime sky, "aware that he was just another speck adrift in stardust on the absolute zero breath of God."

I SAILED WITH MAGELLAN (the title comes from a song Perry's brother Mick sang when they were kids) was published in 2004, which to my way of thinking still makes it contemporary fiction. I don't read a lot of contemporary fiction. Maybe I should make a point of reading more, because I SAILED WITH MAGELLAN is first-rate literature. It easily is one of the ten best books I read in 2012.

Double Down on Your Data, Third Edition, by Clive J. Pearson

Gambling - the wagering of money or something of material value on an event with an uncertain outcome with the primary intent of winning additional money and/or material goods - has been with us since ancient times. Greek mythology tells the story of Poseidon, Zeus and Hades dividing the world between them in a dice game; Poseidon won the sea, Zeus the heavens and Hades the underworld. The land, I suppose, was left to the rest of us.

Gambling has, of course, changed dramatically since those ancient times. Today's casino operators are faced with a gambler who is much more sophisticated than the ancient Roman soldier who tossed a coin in the air and called "Heads or Ships."

To succeed in today's highly competitive gaming landscape, casino operators must understand their customers like never before. Luckily for them, we have entered a brave new world of gambling and entertainment where customers knowingly - and oftentimes unknowingly - leave clues to their gambling behavior. Player cards allow casinos to get a deeply personal view of their patrons, a view that can reveal not only the patron's gambling habits but also their dining, spa and shopping spend throughout the casino property. Predictive analytics can analyze this data, quantify every dollar a customer spends on property and then predict the customer's unique value to the casino, while also providing clues that will make marketing campaigns directed to this individual much more effective than scattershot direct mailing campaigns.

Intensive competition in the gaming industry is making it more and more important for casino operators to not only pinpoint the small percentage of players who make up a large percentage of their profits, but also to create a long and lasting relationship with these players. By learning about a customer's unique wants, desires and needs, a casino property can market directly to those wants, desires and needs, thereby making their marketing efforts much more effective.

Double Down On Your Data was written to show casino management how to best cull through their in-house patron data to discover who their most profitable patrons are, and also to show them how to market to these individuals to create a long, lasting and highly profitable relationship.

Double Down On Your data will help casino executives understand all of the current tools available to casino operators; tools that can help them understand their patron's better; tools that can help them create better prediction models; tools that can help them market to their players more effectively; and, most importantly, tools that can help them raise their casino's ROI.

Gambling has been with us since ancient times and it will undoubtedly be with us forever; it is just too ingrained within the human psyche to ever go away. Double Down On Your Data concludes with a description of an ideal solution that gives casino managers a clear understanding of their patrons. A solution designed to support hotel and resort operational departments with one clean and complete view of their guests. Working in tandem with a casino's Property Management System, this solution allows casino management to track each patron's individual gaming habits, which in turn helps determine who the casino's most valuable players are. Casino marketing departments find this information instrumental when deciding who they should market to and what promotions are the most likely to find success.

From the Back Cover
Although Poseidon, Zeus and Hades may no longer be dividing up the world in a game of dice, flocks of tourists still flood through the gates of Las Vegas' Caesar's Palace, Atlantic City's Taj Mahal and Macau's oddly named casino Greek Mythology. In Double Down On Your Data, author Clive Pearson reveals that we have entered a brave new world of gambling and entertainment, a world where casino executives can cull through their casino's in-house patron data and discover who are their most profitable patrons. Armed with this information, these casino executives can then market to their most valuable patrons in a highly personal way, thereby creating a long and lasting -- and usually highly profitable -- relationship.

Double Down On Your Data teaches casino executives how best to manage their customer relationships as today they are faced with a gambler who is much more sophisticated than the ancient Roman soldier who tossed a coin in the air and called "Heads or Ships."

An interesting take on the masters of CRM
By Rick Cook
Casinos were practicing CRM for years before there was CRM. And they're masters at it. The fine art of building a relationship with customers ("players") to separate them from their money ("Play") is decades old in the gambling ("gaming") industry. In the course of decades the casinos have honed and perfected their techniques.

Even if you find the techniques used by casinos too specialized to apply to your situation, you can learn a lot about the philosophy of CRM from this book.

I am sorry but this book is worthless
By International-Investors
I have read so many books on Business Analytics as it is my job to be constant updated on the latest trends, industry application, etc.

I bought this book with the hope of learning some specifics about the application within the casino and hospitality industry. The book offers no insight that you cannot find in a white paper by any well respected business analytics vendor.

The Origins of Graphic Design in America, 1870-1920, by Ellen Mazur Thomson

In this book, Ellen Mazur Thomson examines for the first time the early development of the graphic design profession. It has been thought that graphic design emerged as a profession only when European modernism arrived in America in the 1930s, yet Thomson shows that the practice of graphic design began much earlier. Shortly after the Civil War, when the mechanization of printing and reproduction technology transformed mass communication, new design practices emerged. Thomson investigates the development of these practices from 1870 to 1920, a time when designers came to recognize common interests and create for themselves a professional identity. What did the earliest designers do, and how did they learn to do it? What did they call themselves? How did they organize themselves and their work? Drawing on an array of original period documents, the author explores design activities in the printing, typefounding, advertising, and publishing industries. She considers the role of labor unions, advertising agencies, schools of art and design, and professional associations; the writings and ideas of Henry Lewis Johnson and William Addison Dwiggins; and the impact of the values of the Aesthetic Movement and the Arts and Crafts Movement.

The Operas of Verdi: Volume 1: From Oberto to Rigoletto, by Julian Budden

Marked by extraordinary research and enhanced by hundreds of musical illustrations, this monumental study follows the development of Verdi's oeuvre from his earliest opera Oberto to his final work, Falstaff. In writing the first edition of this classic work--which appeared to great acclaim in 1973--Julian Budden mined the vast resources of European archives to provide a groundbreaking interpretation of Verdi's work, and along the way discovered much new material, including an unpublished additional aria for I Due Foscari. Now available in a revised edition, The Operas of Verdi is now brought up to date in light of the most recent scholarship, making it more useful and entertaining than ever.
Volume 1 traces the organic growth and development of the composer's style from 1839 to 1851--from Oberto to Rigoletto--and examines each opera in detail, offering a full account of its dramatic and historical origins as well as a brief critical evaluation. More than 350 musical examples make the significance of these early operas to Verdi's developing style especially clear.
In the second volume, Budden covers those operas written during the decadence of the post-Rossini period. During this time Verdi, having exhausted the simple lyricism found in such works as Il Trovatore and La Traviata, found new life as he directly confronted the masters of the Paris opera with his Les Vêpres Siciliennes. The new scale and variety of musical thought that can be sensed in the Italian operas which followed is shown here to culminate in La Forza del Destino.
The third and final volume of the study covers the quarter century which saw grand opera on the Parisian model established throughout Italy, and the spread of cosmopolitan influences that convinced many that Italian music was losing its identity. Verdi produced his four last and greatest operas during this time--Don Carlos, Aida, Otello, and Falstaff--operas which helped inaugurate "versimo," in which a new, recognizably Italian idiom was realized.
These three volumes cover every aspect of Verdi's rich and varied operatic achievement. Every lover of opera in particular and music in general will want a set in their library.

Amazon.com Review
The three volumes of studies of Verdi's operas by Julian Budden are rightly classics of the genre. This is owing to their scope of information on the genesis, circumstances, variants, and specifics of the operas themselves--certainly the fullest description these works have ever been given--as well as to the wealth of surrounding information about the composer, his life, his friends, and his times. It is a measure of the excellence of Budden's achievement that this cornucopia of information is surveyed in very readable prose--readers get a picture of each work within its context. Budden's knowledge of 19th-century opera--both in Italy and in France--is wide-ranging, and he is able to place Verdi and his works in comparison with those of Donizetti, Pacini, Mercadante, and Meyerbeer. He discusses how the great operatic genius emerged from the background of early-19th-century opera and how Verdi's own early, uneven works blossomed into the glory of his later ones. Budden, thankfully, is not a hagiographer, and he recognizes Verdi's faults as well as his strengths, but few--if any--writers have managed to demonstrate how Verdi both blended in with his musical surroundings and stood out from them. These studies, with all their richness, are a good source of information about a host of lesser composers of the time. Budden includes many musical examples to highlight his writing in this, a work of scholarship of the highest order. --Patrick J. Smith

Review
'Where on earth did Verdians turn before Budden? When the first volume of his chronological study of the complete 31 operas appeared in 1973, it was already clear this could prove the standard work...With Verdi productions proliferating in the run-up to the centenary of his death in 2001, this great study grows ever more necessary.' indispensable for Verdians; a major and accessible work of scholarship
By Stanley Crowe
Like another review here, this one really relates to all three volumes of Budden's traversal of Verdi's operas. I can't think of many books in which works of art (whether literature, painting, drama, or music) are as effectively contextualized as they are here. The context is historical in several senses: it is attentive to the particular political and social circumstances in which Verdi's operas were created, but it's attentive too to the "politics" of the Italian (and at times Parisian) opera world in which Verdi , Donizetti, Bellini, Rossini, and a host of minor figures belonged. We hear about managers, impresarios, singers, opera houses, and of course librettists, and Budden quotes tellingly from Verdi's ample correspondence with all these groups. We get a sense, therefore, of Verdi, not only as composer, but as businessman and collaborator, and we get a sense of his energy and personality and decisiveness. Its an attractive portrait: a touchy, principled, ambitious, and , of course, highly gifted man. But Budden gives us more: the musical context is also made clear in excellent general essays at the beginnings of the first two volumes, before Budden embarks on individual chapters on every opera. In the individual chapters, we get accounts of the genesis of the operas, plenty of information on their sources (often with ample quotation), including descriptions of how the opera plots modify the plots of the originals, and some account of the early reception and early performance history of each opera. Then there's the musical analysis itself, and the text is replete with musical examples. Budden has a fine sense of where Verdi's originality is in evidence, even in the early operas, and while these early operas get extensive treatment in their individual chapters, the "great" operas get correspondingly fuller treatment and analysis. Even if your musical knowledge is limited (as mine is), you will find Budden's three volumes fascinating and instructive -- and, as important as anything, written with clarity, grace, and humor. This is a major work of criticism and scholarship.

A Terrific Achievement
By New Yorker
I'm reviewing the first volume, but this is really about all three volumes. After a
general introduction situating Verdi in the Italian opera structure of his time, the
author present a separate chapter on each title, first giving the background of the
project and then analyzing the action scene by scene, with plenty of musical examples.
Instead of following a recording with the libretto, you can follow it using Budden's
precis, for much enlightenment on how Verdi created music drama. It's really an
amazingly detailed excursion. Had you heard about Budden's plans before he actually
started writing, you might guess that no one life is long enough to allow an author to
lay out so much detail, so much thought and insight. There are many great books. But
this one is astonishing.
